Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

10/09/2007: New Belgium Abbey Belgian Style Ale has a really nice presentation. It is a transparent pecan brown color and has a generous level of carbonation and a foamy lasting head. The sweet aroma contains caramelized malt with some tropical and dark fruits and a touch of alcohol. Caramel malts, some banana and spice, a well-integrated fruitiness, and a hint of peat/smoke blend together to form the complex and satisfying aroma. It has a roasty finish with a touch of hoppy bitterness that lingers. Some alcohol peaks out here and there but adds some character. The body is medium-full and is pretty smooth on the palate. This beer is fairly complex overall and quite good. It definitely exceeded expectations. I haven’t had an Abbey Dubbel for awhile and this one hit the spot.

12 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 7.0% by Vol. / Best before: 09MAY08 21660 007568 1122) from kyzr. Thanks Mitch! Rating #489 for this beer...

rated blind from "Better Know a Style: Abbey Dubbel" tasting. pours amber-orangish, creamy off white head. nose is plumy and caramel. flavor plumy, dark fruits, hint of spice, caramel. mouth feel is prickly, carbonation is fizzy. slight alcohol heat as well. 3.4.

4/21/09, 2005 vintage, aged 4 years. this became a bit oxidized in the aroma with some vinegar notes starting but nothing too bad, the flavor still had some nice malt and dark fruit but thinning a bit. this actually held up okay but by no means improved.3.2.

33cl bottle. Pours out a sparking copper colour. The aroma to me seemed rather earthy. Good quality dubbel that is approaching a proper Belgian beer.

Medium brown with a beige head. Aroma of dried papaya, almonds, and some alcohol. Flavor is yeasty with a touch of mustiness, banana, orange zest round out the flavor. I would prefer a touch more substantial body, but that’s just me. Pretty tasty.

Deep red beer with a faint orange head. Aroma is of sweet yeast and fruits. Flavor is of sweet fruits yet dry. Good abbey as the brew has a sllight burn of alcohol at the end.

Wow. Okay. Finally something redeeming from NB. Pours a slightly cloudy ruby. Nose is very like, well, a Belgian brew. Yeasty with a sweet and citric tone. Taste is very good. Smooth and even. You get that slightly sweet edge that comes and goes with the rolling of the flavors. Overall a very good brew I think. Recently I was getting so irritated at the lack of interesting stuff from NB that I was about to just write the whole brewery off. But this one is redemption in a bottle. Damn good. The feel is slightly thick, but a bit lighter than some other Belgian brews. Definitely drinkable.

Dark brown with a tan head that shrinks to a thin layer that hangs on for the duration. Very smooth, spicy, and fruit flavors, alcohol is hidden well.
