COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Good initial malt, quick dissipation though. Not much for aroma or head.

Actually had this one in a mOvie theater while watching the immortals. Really good quaffable Belgium flavors. Those darknfruits and candi sugars in an easy drinker. Well done

Bottle. Pours muddy golden brown. Aroma is dominated by dark fruit. Flavor is quite fruity with notes of caramel and rich malt. Flavor is somewhat restrained though, a little thin and watery for a dubbel. Still, not bad.

The beer pours with a red-brown color. The aroma of the beer has a strong malt component, along with some caramel, banana, and light hops. Almost like a brown ale. When I sip the beer, I taste more caramel malt along with some grassy hops, and the traditional "belgian" yeast. The palate is smooth and substantial. This is my first tasting of this beer while taking notes, but I’ve tried it before. The last time I didn’t like this beer so much, but this time I’m starting to appreciate it.

Draft. Honestly served way too cold, but I was thirsty so I didn’t let it warm properly. Just thought I’d let you know. Pours a deep amber with nice white head. Smell is earthy, yeasty, caramel malts, ripened fruits and maye some floral notes. Taste is sweet caramel with cloves, mild banana, yeast certainly. This was good, but could have been better if warmer for sure. Score may reflect this, so I will have to rerate at some point.

Bottle. The pour was a medium brown with a reddish hue and a large (2-3 finger) off white rocky head that was mostly lasting and had excellent lacing that left behind some nice residue which was left sticking to the glass. The aroma was of a mild caramel malt, a light resin hop and a sweet yeast with notes of banana, maple syrup and some dark fruit with a mild alcohol tinge. It tasted malty sweet with a hint of caramel and a touch of syrup in the beginning and finished about the same but with notes of banana, some fruitiness and a mild alcohol warming at the end. The flavor was left lingering on the taste buds for a nice long while along with the mild taste of alcohol. Mouthfeel was light to medium in body, creamy and a little syrupy in texture with a nice mild carbonation. Overall a very pleasant tasting Dubbel, not to sweet with a mild alcohol finish. A good representation of the style and a very well balanced brew.

Pours absolutely crystal clear, deep amber. Did they really bottle condition? Hmm.... Smells pretty sweet, malty... a little yeast character. Kinda fruity. Carbonation is lower than expected. The head was thin and didn’t last at all. Somewhat lively on the tongue though. Flavor is definitely on the fruity side of Belgian, and it’s pretty clean. Sweet but not sticky. Overall it’s kind of boring. Can’t say that it excites me, but it’s decent beer.

Date: November 4, 2011 Mode: Bottle Source: Darkness Day Appearance: Translucent reddish brown with nice amount of head and lacing. Aroma: caramel and fruity, banana for sure in there. Flavor: Consistent with aroma, relatively thin bodied, smooth with a funky bitter finish. Other: Liked it other than the odd finish.
