Dubbercody (214), Vancouver, Washington, USA Feb 19, 2007 Nice fluff leaves lace on the side of the glass, Smells great as I’ve let it warm to cool (not cold) temps. (Round about 50-55). Damn nice smelling beer that really opens up and is fantastic at the ’recommended" temperature. cyanescens (156), Seattle, Washington, USA Feb 15, 2007 Bottles. Beer has nice head and body. I appreciate the balance between sweet and bitter. Very smooth. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Feb 12, 2007 Courtesy of goldtwins via trade
Bottle: The aroma consists of cherry, bubblegum, caramel, and a hint of yeast. It pours hazy orangish-red with a small biege head that quickly fades to a ring. The flavor starts with a big caramel and cherry combination. The finish is a combination of dark fruits, raisin, bubblegum, and mild bitterness. fakepurseninja (773), Washington, USA Feb 12, 2007 Hmmm - Drinking New Belgium beer is like a rollercoaster - some are great, some leave you very sunken and dissapointed. With this abbey dubbel I feel like I am listening to Coloradians doing sub-par Kareoke of good trappist ales. This was too sour, overly pear flavored and too thin. Like an Elvis impersonation of a Chimay. Its got the right character but the sideburns just are too uneven. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Feb 10, 2007 Muddy mahogany pour with a lasting off-white head. Malty aroma with definite hints of raisins and overall sweet scent. Flavor was good, but not really impressive. The flavor did open nicely as it warmed to near room temperature, and had an odd alcohol laced finish...definitely preferred New Belgium’s Trippel to this brew; something was just off! mrdeath5493 (108), Arkansas, USA Feb 10, 2007 Reddish brown. Sweet, malty, fruity and balanced. Nice complex dubbel from a US microbrewer. brstp (201), Princeton, New Jersey, USA Feb 8, 2007 Bottle. Relatively clear dark ruby color, aroma of yeast and brown sugar. Taste has a sort of unpleasant sourness, nutty, thin finish. zachh (19), USA Feb 3, 2007 I have tried most of New Belgium’s other stuff, and this definitely is very high up there. It pours like Dr. Pepper and can have a giant head if it is poured too fast. The taste is pretty strong. It has a lot of body to it, but it doesn’t hit like most bodies. It’s a subtle punch in the face, if that makes any sense. The after taste stays for a while and reminds me of 1554.
Drinking this beer with out food isn’t something that I would recommend, but having it with a steak would be amazing.
