Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

I have tried most of New Belgium’s other stuff, and this definitely is very high up there. It pours like Dr. Pepper and can have a giant head if it is poured too fast. The taste is pretty strong. It has a lot of body to it, but it doesn’t hit like most bodies. It’s a subtle punch in the face, if that makes any sense. The after taste stays for a while and reminds me of 1554. Drinking this beer with out food isn’t something that I would recommend, but having it with a steak would be amazing.

12 oz bottle. Clear reddish-orange color with a thick lasting off white head that laced the glass. Attractive estery aroma accented by brown sugar and a whiff of yeasty bread dough. Appropriate effervescence. Spicy, brown sugary malt flavor accented by fruity esters and a touch of white wine. Lightly acidic up front and dry toward the end.

Bottle from Hy-Vee poured into trappist glass at 52 degrees - Pours beautiful deep red with a 1/2 finger tan head; Malt, raisins, lots of esters, a tint of alcohol to the nose; Lots of dried fruit, malt, yeast, molasses, lightly tart grapes and a little bitterness in the corners of my mouth on the initial taste; Aftertaste is slightly dry and yeasty, but with a nice sweetness; medium body; Lively carbonation; My main complaint with this one was that it didn’t feel full enough. More body would have made this an absolutely great beer. I was reminded of St. Bernadus a little after this one warmed some. Another great beer by NB!

Bottle courtesy of ford9719. Mahogany/brown with frothy off-white head, fades to film. Fruity yeast esters up front, banana and candied prune. Light spice background, with some more residuel malty sweetness. Flavor on par with aroma, decent banana, dark fruits and candy sugar. Fades to nothing in the finish though. Body/mouthfeel thins out in the finish as well. Really a pretty nice brew but, lack of body/finish really hurts the score though.

Pours a very dark brown with some really nice ruby highlights around the edges. There’s a one inch head that fades to a thick cap, and leaves behind quite a bit of lacing. Smell; a little bit os sweet caramel with lots of dark roasted malts and a somewhat bitter coffee aroma. Taste; just as the aroma implies, nice and malty. There’s some coffee, a light presence of anise, with a little chocolate with hints of caramel, and a just touch of some hop bitterness. I’m more of a hop head, but when I’m in the mood for malts this is a great one. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, and very easy to drink.

Bottle. Nice brown, light head. A bit nutty, with ashtray undertones. Somewhat light bodied, but not bad for an everyday Belgian-style.

Biscuity, brown sugar aroma, with a hint of spice. Reddish brown color. Caramalized banana, brown sugar and caramel, a little yeasty, some biscuit flavor, with a subtle spicy finish. One of my favorite beers from New Belgium.

Pours nut brown with a modest head. Aroma is sweet and malty with yeast. Flavor is nutty and pleasant. Finish is dry and yeasty. Nice recreation of the dubbel from NB.
