hepburn82 (141), Scotland Dec 19, 2006 A decent shot at at abbey. Yeast, spice and malt on the nose. Swett stuff, some malt caramel and brown sugar in the flavour. Some ester notes throughout also. Nutty maybe. Warming finish which i like. I prefer their triple. hayduke (1619), Eureka, California, USA Dec 15, 2006 Updated: Dec 17, 2006Poured brown with medium tan head and moderate lacing. Nose of yeast, malt, and spices. Palate a bit fizzy. Flavor fruity. Good finish. Nice for winter. graham515 (420), Houston, Texas, USA Dec 9, 2006 Updated: May 15, 2009Thick tanish/white head with a pretty floral scent. Color is a deep brown. Goes down quite smooth and the taste is exceptionally smooth for a 7%. Hints of molasses and figs. Has a bit of a spicy after taste, one of New Belgiums best. The carbonation level leaves more to be desired compared to the bottle conditioned belgian dubbels. Great beer though that is very readily available! talon1117 (611), Bellvue, Colorado, USA Dec 7, 2006 Pours a rich, clear, amber-brown with a pale beige, fluffy, full head with some lasting and some lacing. Nose is wonderfully spicy, notes of clove, allspice, banana bread, and some belgian yeast with a little floral bouquet. Flavor is nutty, banana bread, with clove, caramel, and some yeast; some floral hop notes with a moderate bitterness. Palate is lively, medium-full, creamy, and "fresh"-tasting. Finishes with clove and banana and an almost dryness. A great dubbel with great spiciness and nice malt backing flavors. Very pornounced and right up there with the dubbels fo Belgium. Mutualaid (136), Texas, USA Nov 20, 2006 Pours ruby red with a short-lived white head. Aromas of alcohol, nutmeg and banana; very little hop bouquet. Authentic Belgian malt flavors with Vegetal and cigar(!) notes; a hint of hops in the finish. Really decent finish, very warming. Surprisingly good. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Nov 14, 2006 shiet, this beer was all over the damn place...whack a mole even! Pours a brown tan murked colour, small amount of head that stuck around (ya know..lacing coolcat) has that ’abbey’ aroma..sweetness, banannas and crap like that on my hat. has a off-sweet bitterness, slight punch in the back kinda bitters...wiggles!....a good brew but not for the novice abbey drinker, normal people might think this beer went bad...not hating but it is bold and the beutiful. lacks that lil something and the taste is a tad off but a abbey substitute anyday aunt may. jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Nov 13, 2006 Updated: Nov 15, 2006Pours brown with hints of ruby and amber and with a huge fluffy, light tan head. The aroma is of spices and lovely, funky, Belgian yeast. Some allspice and cloves, spiced and candied pears, and thick, doughy, yeasty bread are also all apparent in the aroma. The flavor is mild and sweet at first, on the tip of the tongue - hints of malts, wildflower honey, and cloves. Lots of fruit enter the picture on the middle of the tongue - banana, figs, and perhaps hints of dried cherries. The finish is full-bodied with some malt flavor, some cloves, and hints of cough syrup. There is also a very slight hop bitterness on the back of the tongue, hiding in the after-taste. Most of the after-taste, however, is yeast with hints of the spices found in aroma and flavor. Very interesting beer. A bit heavy in the stomach, but pleasing to the mouth. rotoguru (93), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Nov 10, 2006 12 oz bottle - pours medium red/brown with a tan medium head that lasts; a good amount of carbonation and yeast combine to give it a mild hazy look. Aroma is complex with banana bread, roasted nut, malt, sweet, spice and mild rubber tones (that last part could be the casting resin we just worked with). Flavor is full-bodied malty/bready with some caramalt and nutty flavors that linger lightly on the palate (mostly due to body). Enjoy!
