COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Brentwood, MO. A fantastic beer. Truly, my favorite of the usual New Belgian beers. A very noble attempt at the Belgian style. Sweet, malty with big yeast flavors with hints of spice. Abbey is medium bodied with a mouthful of flavor and complexity, a deep amber color and a big, chunky head.

Pours a nice mahogany, about an inch and a half of thick, dense off-white foam. Smells bready/yeasty, a bit of nutmeg, sweet. Taste is like you’d expect from a dubbel but with a bit of a metallic start to it. A really good dubbel, but not great.

pours a dark but rather clear brown. smell is of malt sweetness and caramel. not much spiciness in the nose but it comes across in the first taste. lacks orange-y aroma and bananas like the trippel.

Pretty good. Really liked the aroma, but tastes a bit weak for the style. Still, it’s a lot cheaper than the real Belgians, so it makes for a good session beer or a good introduction to more complex beers for neophytes.

Pours a nice semi-clear dark amber with a THICK head. Aroma is incredibly rich: toffee, cinnamon, nutmeg. Other smells that I can’t quite describe. So far, this beer is amazing! Let’s see how it tastes. Flavor is toffee, vanilla, and carbon dioxide. It’s not bad, but not as rich as the aroma. Palate is about average; smooth, not particularly silky or anything. I think the carbonation gets in the way of the flavor a bit.

Candied mixed fruit nose with some baking spice, some dough and dust. Really dark reddish brown, almost opaque, lacing abounds after a nice 2 finger head. At first the beer had a metallic bite on the finish but that went away, I blame it on the carbonation, the beer was complete and not overly complex, a little more yeast balance would be nice. Overall, very nicely made brew at the right price, great intro to real belgian dubbels.

Pours brown with red to orange highlights and a moderate off-white head. Aroma is nice and fruity, bananas, apples some toast and caramel. Flavor fits the same description to me, but it’s smoothness stood out to me. Finish was pretty interesting, like it was some sort of earthy banana counterpart. Medium bodied, lightly textued for the style, but good and mostly authentic. You can’t find a better dubbel for the price that’s for damn sure!
