Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

12 oz bottle. Clear orange brown with a creamy tan head. Leaves a garland of lace. Yeast, bubblegum and bananas. Sharp carb. A little thin and oily. Mild caramel and club soda. Some orange and green banana creep in. Bready finish.

Bottle. Full bodied Ale. I agree with Kreepindeth in that it smells like Chimay. I was not a big fan of the clove aftertaste, however. A bit sour, get Fat Tire instead.

Bottle.

Pours a clear burnt orange with a passable off-white head. The aroma is cloves and lemon, spicy, some toffee. Flavor is thin diet cola blended with banana Nestle Quick. (OK, it’s not actually as bad as that description makes it sound, but both of those flavors are strong elements of the profile). There’s some cinnamon and other spice in there too;

I sure don’t get the ratings that this one is pulling. Many raters that I trust, respect, and usually agree with have given this 3.8 or higher, with plenty of 4’s out there. Almost of all of those ratings were 2003 or earlier; this bottle is a 2006. Either this beer has gone to the dogs since then, or I’ve really got my head in the wrong place tonight.

Dark brown and opaque with a creamy light brown medium head and slight carbonation. Smells pf bananas, cloves, and cola. Rough mouthfeel, ample acidity with sweet malt and fruity overtones and a long pronounced malty finish.

Smells like Chimay. Spicy yeast and some dark fruity notes. Color is bright copper, with almost no head. Tastes of raisons, whisky, and some mild bitterness.

Bottle poured a full, hazed, rich burgundy, with capuccino-tan head. Aromas of chocolate, cherry, yeast. I taste all of those, as well as the roast and hint smoke. Perhaps banana, fig, clove. I would love a bit thicker body, like the grand cru (which they should bottle), but the slight syrupyness satifies. Can you tell I like it yet?

Bottle pours a clear dep mahogany with a nice thick creamy light tan head. Aroma is fruity and belgian, and with soft warm bready notes as well. Flavor is of lightly toasted malts, the yeasty flavors that the Belgians all seem to have and the malts were kind of biscuity. Similar to NBs Fat Tire. Interesting and another example of this style that makes me like it more.
