Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Pours mahogany w/ a shallow spritzy froth. Aroma of rock candy and stewed raisons. Medium nectar w/ ample residual effers. Flavors are semi sweet w/ medicinal properties up front. Malt, coffee, leather, brown sugar, fig, over ripened sun burnt stone fruit. Complex and well balanced but obviously an American version.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a really nice tan head. Lasted the whole glass. Aromas of raisin, fruit, molassas. Flavors were very malty and yeasty. Sweet and very good.

Pours dark brown/reddish in the light with a medium slight off white head. Aroma is yeast, candy sugar, some dark fruits. Flavor is interesting, some apricots, lot so f yeast, bit of sugar. A bit too bitter.

Bottle at Old Chicago. Also served way way too cold - I tried to warm this one up under my pits though - yeah what you will do for beer. Dark amber and brownish in colour with a huge but fast dissapearing head. Mild and "clean" in both aroma and flavour. Malty and sweet with a hint of caramel. A bit too thin and not full and round enough.

Bottle:Deep, clear amber color with an off-white quicly diminishing head and sticky lacing. Malt aromas marked by a strong yeast presence as well as sweet spices and alcohol. Yeast dominates the taste as well. You also notice a slight clove & banana flavor. The feel is smooth. Nice.

Bottled, thanks Slothgar! Transparent and slightly bubbly deep color pour with a light tan head, nose of malts and corn, a bit medicine-y, but the sweetness goes away in the body leaving a well balanaced maltiness, somewhat smokey. Good!

Bottled (with thanks to Slothgar T!): Dark copper with a thick, fast bubbling beige head. Hights of hops on nose, heavy caramel and nutty malts on palate. Mild bitterness. Described by my wife as "Bourbon-y." Sweet, with a mild burn in the throat. Again, I say, why the $&@! are they shipping that Fat Tire crap when this could be hitting stores?

8/4//06 Bottle shared by Blake. Clear dark brown body under a an off-white scattering of bubbles. Raisin, phosphory rubber, and brown sugar in the nose. Not as much sweetness in the flavor - toasty caramel and raisin under nicely bitter lemon peel and grass. I like this Americanized (bitter) dubbel.
