Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Thanks to tjthresh for this BB Aug. 04, 2006. The beer pours to a dark brown body with a thin beige head. The aroma is fruity and estery. The flavor is yeasty, toffee, walnuts and peanut skins, interesting sweetness. Tastes pretty good IMO. The palate is moderately bodied. Decent feel and carbonation.

Best before 8/4/06. Light coppery brown, creamy ring of a very light tan head. Sweet belgian yeast, light hopping. Fruity. Exotic caramel. Revisiting aroma a few minutes later yields very subtle smoke. Dry sweet pepper, very slight smoke, fizzy, wood, peppers (not hot, just flavor). Okay beer, but... just okay. BUT, a nice spin on a style that could get trendy and sweet.

Pours a deep ruby red/brown with a medium beige head which fades to a lasting film and some nice lace. Aroma is fruity esters upfront with some fresh crystal malts and special B, then some spice and yeast. Flavor is strong sharp crystal malts, fruits, toffee, light cigar smoke, and herbal hops. Nice palate- not too complex and the yeast is kept to a minimum. Carbonattion seems a bit soft for the style. Still really nice. Thanks to TBC2 for hooking me up with a bottle of this.

Brown, with a big beige head. Chestnut and brown sugar aroma. Toasty and mellow flavors, with a bready quality, too. Notes of molasses and walnuts in the finish. Thanks to Secret Santa for this one.

My first shot at a belgian style since returning from europe. Great thick head on top of a deep red beer. Sweet nse with abit of spice. Nice sweet flavor, but lacking the complexity of the great beglains. not a bad brew, but wouldn’t holds its own against westmalle. maybe I’ll go lock for the grand cru

12oz bottle via trade with cbkschubert! - Thanks Craig! - Pours a nice dark amber color with a foamy tan head that stayed very well and laced the glass. Aromas of caramel, raisin, candi sugar, some spice. Flavor is a nice smooth caramel, raisin, some candi sugar, and a fair spice finish. Carbonated well with a good soft mouthfeel. This was an enjoyable dubbel.

The aroma on this beer is delectable, especially when cold. Sweet, peanut brittle, spicy and spiked. As it warms it dies down in intensity a little. The pour is also nce, with a thick head that leaves a solid sheet of lace down the glass. Unfortunately, the taste isn’t as sweet and peanut-brittley as the aroma, and is also rather thin and tastes slightly sour/infected.

One of my favorites. A very good Belgian-style beer with the right flavor profile. If anything, it’s biggest weakness is a slight lack of spicy flavor character compared to some of the Belgians. Overall I’d say it could go toe-to-toe with most import and any domestic Belgian-style doubles.
