IPAndy (120), minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jun 8, 2006 Little head on pour, sort of looks like soda head. Floral/soapy aroma. A bit thin in the mouth. Some drinks are spicy (when I let it sit below my tongue for a second). Some drinks are are fruity (normal drinks). Some end up sort of yeasty (swishing). Started too sugary when it was cold, went to nice spice and fruit (pears/bananas maybe), then warmed up to yeasty/spicy/sugary with more noticeable alcohol. Middle third was great. bgoguen (53), Colorado, USA Jun 7, 2006 Fairly decent reproduction of an Abbey-style dubbel, although I will say that doesn’t compare to the real thing. It’s lacking in body compared to Belgian dubbels and has a slightly funky after-palate. Still, it is a perfectly drinkable beer with pronounced banana and other fruity notes. Yeasty with a great head, almost creamy. I think it’s more complex than I give it credit for, although I can’t tell what else is going on. The Abbey Grand Cru that you could only get at the brewery was way more fulfilling, richer, and more complex. I would still give it a try if you like dubbels, just to compare to the real deal. (And it’s cheaper) slimweebs (139), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jun 7, 2006 This is one of the best offerings by New Belgium. I like the belgian style, and it has a nice sweet flavor with a little bit of spice. A decent amount of alcohol content but it’s well covered. Nice beer. BeerRules (237), Houston, Texas, USA Jun 3, 2006 Creamy tropical fruit aromas like banana, with some bread dough, clove, and a little anise. The head is a fluffy beige, with a dark amber body. Tastes of overly ripened fruit, alcohol, caramelized sugar and slight roast. Spritzy mouthfeel, but the body is quite boring and watery. Overall, it was ok. MrEcted1 (144), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA May 31, 2006 Updated: Jun 1, 2006My favorite beers are Belgian style beers and this one doesn’t satisfy very well. It does have your fruity Belgian flavors pulling through (namely bananas), but there is a LOT to be desired. Pours a nice brown like a dubbel should, but far from authentic tasting. Aroma is yeasty with sugary and ripe mashed fruit notes. Slightly red tinted brown in color with a slowly diminishing two finger thick tan head. Yeasty fore tastes slightly vegetal savory like baby corn. Not getting the malt or raisin notes others got. Bad bottle possibly. Nice feel to it and a slight dry rum cake sweetness, but not enough to make it taste great to my tastebuds. Mostly dominated by a kind of almost chemical tasting yeastiness. Sorta tingly yet still somewhat lifeless feeling ont he tongue. nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 25, 2006 Many thanks to RooftopRogue for this one! Pours a hazy red-orange with a good bit of sediment...a light tan head that retains for a good bit before it becomes a thick film over the top. Candied fruit, yeast, and sweet malt. The flavor gets a lot more yeast, a bit of grape skin, malt and rasin. Nice carbonation level...Dry and malty in the front...light over the middle with a dry sour/bitterness in the finish that fades pretty quick. Not bad overall..a bit sweet...a bit spicy, and a bit fresh...though a bit thin. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 15, 2006 Very creamy foamy head on amber brandyish body, a bit of yeast sediment as expiration date in 2 more months. Fruity yeasty aroma and taste. Very creamy mouthfeel like whipped cream. Tagy fruityness and hops kick finish so that aftertaste is melange of malty, yeasty and moderately bitter. Very enjoyable American version that stands up there with Ommegang and Unibroue. Only 7%.
