COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Dark brown pour with a nice head. Got a growler at the brewery. Sweet aroma. Flavor has chocolate, caramel, sweet fruit. Very nice beer.

UPDATED: MAR 13, 2008 Had on tap at City Beer in SF. Poured a very nice dark amber brown color. Sweet malty smell. Taste was sweet malts, a bit of citrus, and bananna...A VERY mild, and wayyyy too drinkable dubbel...I was giddy after one glass that I most likely drank way too fast!

bottle. pours a deep red amber with a big off white head, which fades slowly and leaves behind huge sheets of lacing. nutty spicy malt scents, with anice, coriander, grape, raisin, black cherry, and some bready malt. the bread malt dominates the taste, with some spices, notes of pears, grapes, and raisins. light bittersweet finish, medium body, lots of carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. the spice and malt and esters in this blend together perfectly, and you get a really solid belgian brew as a result.

Malty aroma, and dark amber color with a nice frothy head. Flavor is a blend of malts and spices, with subtle fruitiness. Finishes dry.

12oz bottle from BlackForestCO. Straightforward and simple aroma. Spicy yeast, sweeter toffee malt and banana esters. Roasted caramel malt and alcohol as well. Pours dark amber/brown with a lasting white head leaving decent lacing. Drier toffee malt and spicy yeast initially on the tongue. Some earthy and leafy notes balanced by a lot of banana sweetness. Medium bodied. Slightly sticky with a sweeter finish.

Not the beer it used to be. See the bottle with the monk on the left?... that was a very good beer with decent complexity and exceptional drinkability. It had wonderful secondary fermentation particles floating around in it and at the price, it couldn’t be beat as an everyday beer. The newer Abbey, with the glass of beer on the label is clear as a bell, albiet with that same wonderful deep crimson sheen... smells of chocolate biscuits and tastes about the same. Let it warm, still no depth. Granted this is still one of the best beers on most stores’ shelves in a state where we have an abundance of decent brews. On the plus side, it still has a fantastic appearance and great mouthfeel, but I sure do miss the monk.
