Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Dark brown body with reddish hue. Creamy, beige head with nice lacing, mostly lasting. Big fruity aroma with notes of golden raisins, bananas and caramel. Flavor is sweet plums, raisins, apples and cloves. Big banana flavor comes at the end. Slightly bitter finish, soft and smooth mouthfeel.

12oz bottle: Pours a brown/amber color, good sized head, very fine bubbles, off-white. Aroma of perfume, sweet, alcohol.. Taste of malts, perfume, sugar, aftertaste of malt. Smells & looks lilke a dubbel, but tastes like a brown/double.

Poured a clear golden amber color with a small off-white head. The aroma and flavor matched each other. Yeasty and fruity. Raisins mainly. Semi-dry finish.

Brown with a thick head. Taste is of dark fruit with a yeasty spice note. Good example of the style. Wish I had more access to New Belgium’s offerings.

Poured into my Delirium Tremens tupil glass. Very nice aroma. Dark dried fruit (maybe cherries), dark sugars, caramalts, even maybe so ripe fruits as it warms a bit more. Dense reddish brown with a fair amount of head. Rich and full of flavor. Raisins, light clove-ish-ness for the yeast, Very sweet upfront, but lots of hop bitterness to finish off the experience. Alcohol is evident, but it does not take away from the overall experience. On of New Belgium’s better regular offerings.

The aroma is the best part of this brew, dark malts, dark dried fruits, dark molasses bread yeastiness, mapole syrup - very comforting smells. Flavors are complex, it seemed like every time I took a sip I’d find something different. I great attempt at at Belgium brew, but still not authintic.

[Bottle] Pours a nice golden yellow with a great looking head. Very good flavors. The aromas where stong and gave off a slight spice smell that was awesome. The balance between hops and malts was pleasant to taste. A very nice beer.
