COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2010 Rerate: Clear dark reddish brown color with a medium tan head. Aroma is pleasantly estery, clove, bananas, balanced by some nice roasted malt notes, dark fruits as well. Flavor is coffee, biscuit, bananas, Belgian yeast. An interesting mix of nice roasted malts and Belgian yeast. Nice effervescent mouthfeel. Complex flavors, small to no head. Great after taste, strong yeast taste. Almost biscuity.

Thanks lb4lb. Dark burgundy color with a tiny white head. Aroma is lots of banana with a touch of smoke. Taste is a little watery but again the banana, some candi sugar and a touch of smoke in the finish. Roastiness and a bit of chocolate come out as it warms. Slightly sweet and fruity with roasted malts hiding in the background and banana throughout. Not bad at all but just thin for the style.

Almost reminds me of a birch beer without the sweetness, if you can imagine that. Mostly dry with enough sweetness to balance it out. Could use a bit more complexity in the flavor department.

Aroma of sweet candy sugar. Pours dark amber. Tastes of sweet malt, candy sugar, and a bit fruity. A bit thin for a dubbel.

Pours deep tan with small and short lived head. Aroma a bit smoky. Flavor candyish with a hint of fruit tartness. The body is almost chewy, but not creamy. I have enjoyed this beer in the winter for years. It now seems to possess a bit to much caramel character.

Pours a dark opaque amber color with a white head. Has hints of caramel, Belgium yeast, candied sugar, and tart fruit. Finishes with a yeasty taste on the tongue.

From a 12-oz. bottle--Poured a dark clear chestnut body with a small rocky whitish head. Nose of spicy fruits and yeastiness. Great rich mouth feel. Mildly caramelly with good carbonation. Finished with a flavor of cherries and funky (in a good way) yeast. Nice bite and clean, crisp finish.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with almost no head and very slight lacing. Smell is sweet, of caramel and bubble gum. The flavor is caramel, and the yeast is definitely noticeable. Not overpowering, but not incredibly complex either. Aftertaste is sweet and entirely pleasant. Mouthfeel is good, but with more fizz than the head would suggest. Overall, a very good beer.
