COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2007 Bottle. Pours clear mahogany with little head. Aroma of sweet banana and fruit. Flavor of banana with lots of fruit, warm alcohol and malty sweetness linger on the finish. A bit too malty for me, at least during the hot Texas summer. I prefer the New Belgium Tripel, but obviously, that is a stylistic difference.

Domestic or no, this is still a very drinkable double. Dark reddish brown color with a very thin off-white head. Complex fruity/spicy aroma. Quite well-balanced flavor of fruits, yeast, and pleasant malty finish. Another great one from New Belgium.

Good attempt at a double. Very good attempt if you look at how old the brewery is. They haven’t had 100 years to slowly perfect their recipe. Dark breads, nuts, fruit cake, clove...all the great smells that come with a double. I’m not a huge double fan, but I love the craftsmanship...and this beer has exactly that.

Thanx Rb for this treat. Poured brownish red, smelled of sweet fruit and Belgian yeast. A very easy drinking Belgian style Double. Great flavor and balanced to perfection.

Pours an effervescent clear mahogany with a creamy off-white head. Light caramel and yeasty esters dominate the nose: bubble gum, plum and black cherry. Medium-bodied, I found this beer to be extremely dry, wicking almost all moisture from my tongue. Sweet, yeasty and malty with notes of plum, bubblegum, wood and white pepper with a light alcohol on the exhale. A nice beer, albeit a bit dry for my tastes.

12 oz. bottle. Aggressive pour, plus a bottle swirl for residual yeast produced surprisingly little head. Foam ring lingers, though. Despite bottle conditioning, this brew is rather clear brown. Nose is quite sweet, with a pear/banana character. Flavor is mostly malts with a fruity, yeasty bite. For this one, the sum is greater than the parts--it’s very quaffable, but watch out for the alcohol content, as it hides rather well.

UPDATED: JUL 13, 2007 Pours a red/brown color w/ a fizzy caramel colored head. Aroma of dark fruit and sweet malt. Flavor is fruity with some spice and malt. A little bit of strange cardboard/bread flavor. Pretty good for the price, but not very good compared to other dubbels.

Red brown body with an off white head. Dark fruits, malty. Not as rich and full as a true Belgian Dubbel. Considering the cost of this compared to authentic Belgian Dubbels, it’s a very good value.
