BuckNaked (1204), Tempe, Arizona, USA May 4, 2005 Bottle courtesy of csbosox: Clear copper/brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity yeast (cloves, banana, apple, pear), light spice, sweet malt, bread, light vinous dark fruits. Medium-full body, lively carbonation. Taste is nutty caramel, corriander, bread, spicy yeast, floral hops, banana, clove, licorice, subtle roasted malt. Finishes medium dry with hints of corriander, clove, and banana coated malt. hezron (600), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA May 2, 2005 Dark amber-brown in color with an off-white head and good lacing. Fruty nose, with apple and then major coriander with a charcoal or earthy twist. Flavor is a sweet charred coriander and nutty malt. Leaves a slight burn in the very back of the throat. Medium body, watery texture and a dry, metallic finish. Thanks to Doppelganger for the bottle. kepano (239), Meudon, France May 1, 2005 This beer pours a rich copper color but stays very clear. The foamy tan head shrinks considerably in about a minute and leaves a nice frothy lacing along the top of the glass. Its aroma is fruity and sweet, not unlike bubble gum and banana. The first sip seems heavy for such a sweet-smelling beer. It has the typical Belgian chalk-like, yeasty mouthfeel but then evolves into a complex flowery yet malty aftertaste with a bit of dryness. I would not serve it too cold as it releases much of its flavor when it warms up. The 7.0% alcohol content definitely kicks in, even after just one of these. Overall this is a good brew from New Belgium which represents the Abbey Dubbel style quite well. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Apr 28, 2005 Large light tan head. HUGE carbonation keeps the head there for the duration. Roasty aroma with a bit of nuts and sour fruit. Dark amber/red in color. Very nice looking in the glass. Dry roasty and rich flavor. Little sour. Some fruit in there. Good belgian style. Nice and lively in the mouth. Finish is dry with a little bitterness. A good dubbel but I have had some that are better. SayNoToCoors (65), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA Apr 7, 2005 I always hope to like this, each time I buy it. I am a huge fan of the local scene here in CO... but I am just not won over by this brew (or New Belgium in general, really). It does have a Belgian-esque flavor (that fruity banana like flavor) but it’s just not right. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but after having loads of really good Belgian style brews this one is just kind of "blah" to me. Gmku (240), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Apr 7, 2005 Wowsers. I like this as much as any imported Belgian dubbel I’ve had. It might be a little thinner in the palate, and it sure looks a lot clearer than the foreign stuff. But this is mighty tasty. Mighty fine stuff. Too bad I must travel the highways and byways to Denver to find this. SunSkates (47), Arkansas, USA Mar 24, 2005 From bottle 2-22-05 Very clear amber color, white head with lots of lacing. Very fruity champagne-like aroma, lots of banana. Full bodied mouthfeel. Flavor of alcohol, sweetness, bananas, yeast. Low bitterness. Pleasant aftertaste. The first belgian style beer I’ve tried and since this one is so good, I’m looking forward to trying more. PorterPounder (3133), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Mar 3, 2005 12 oz bottle - Grapevine Market - Austin, Tx. Pours a medium to dark copper with a frothy khaki colored head with excellent lacing.Aroma is sweet and bubblegum like with notes of candied sugar. The essences of the aroma carry over to the flavor with some licorice added in for good measure. A little bit of yeast adds some balance. Mouthfeel is decent at first but turns a bit metallic near the end. Overall, a decent Dubbel.
