Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Clear dark brown in color with a good size amber head that sticks around. Aromas of banana and spices greet you. Flavors of banana, clove sweet malt, and yeast stand out in the complex flavor of this beer.

rated from a sample at the brewery...an OK beer with a massice nose of banana & bubble gum...and that yeast continues to overwhelm the beer as well...I try this about twice a year and always think the same thing about it...there’s nothing that moves me here...but it does look pretty in the glass...

The bottle poured a beautiful clear garnet-brown liquid with lively, tiny bubbles ascending to an ample off-white creamy head. The head lasted for ever and produced Elizabethan lace on the edge of the glass! The aroma was a heavenly fruity mixture of fresh banana, grapes and plums with notes of clove and pepper in the background. The mouthfeel was just a bit thinner than I would have expected but still quite smooth. The flavors were somewhat complex but primarily sweet malt at first. There was a slight hop bitterness in the middle ... more of a crispness. The finish was very long and had pleasant alcohol warmth to it.

Poured a dark amber with a medium to large off white head. Aroma is sweet malt and fruity yeast. Flavor follows suit with a heavy sweet malt flavor and a very heavy bread yeast flavor. I can’t explain all of the other flavors but this was a very nice dubbel..

Bottle courtesy of csbosox: Clear copper/brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity yeast (cloves, banana, apple, pear), light spice, sweet malt, bread, light vinous dark fruits. Medium-full body, lively carbonation. Taste is nutty caramel, corriander, bread, spicy yeast, floral hops, banana, clove, licorice, subtle roasted malt. Finishes medium dry with hints of corriander, clove, and banana coated malt.

Dark amber-brown in color with an off-white head and good lacing. Fruty nose, with apple and then major coriander with a charcoal or earthy twist. Flavor is a sweet charred coriander and nutty malt. Leaves a slight burn in the very back of the throat. Medium body, watery texture and a dry, metallic finish. Thanks to Doppelganger for the bottle.

This beer pours a rich copper color but stays very clear. The foamy tan head shrinks considerably in about a minute and leaves a nice frothy lacing along the top of the glass. Its aroma is fruity and sweet, not unlike bubble gum and banana. The first sip seems heavy for such a sweet-smelling beer. It has the typical Belgian chalk-like, yeasty mouthfeel but then evolves into a complex flowery yet malty aftertaste with a bit of dryness. I would not serve it too cold as it releases much of its flavor when it warms up. The 7.0% alcohol content definitely kicks in, even after just one of these. Overall this is a good brew from New Belgium which represents the Abbey Dubbel style quite well.

Large light tan head. HUGE carbonation keeps the head there for the duration. Roasty aroma with a bit of nuts and sour fruit. Dark amber/red in color. Very nice looking in the glass. Dry roasty and rich flavor. Little sour. Some fruit in there. Good belgian style. Nice and lively in the mouth. Finish is dry with a little bitterness. A good dubbel but I have had some that are better.
