footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Feb 26, 2005 Wow,the aroma from this is sweet like bubblegum, fruity and delish.the flavor cant keep up with the aromas.I was expecting a wonderrful fruity flavor but is wasn’t to be.still not bad. Thanks to csbosox. DrunkAsASkunk (847), Lynnwood, Washington, USA Feb 21, 2005 This beer pours a deep red color, relatively clear with a slightly tanned white head and a slight bit of lacing. The aroma was heavily bananish, grapefruit, cotton candy, raisins, licorice and perhaps strawberries. The flavor has a heavy raisiny sweetness up front followed by grapefruit. One trait here is the excellent balance between malt and fruity sweetness with this beer. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel, dry cottonmouth finish. BCAR (216), Naperville, Illinois, USA Jan 28, 2005 Very good. deep red/brown translucent. Banana is very forward as is clove and general spice. Nice full malt flavor. High quality ale. Reading through bkelley68 review made me think of how much it does remind me of Aventinus. Must drink one to be sure! 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA Jan 26, 2005 Updated: Jan 27, 2005Bottle pours dark amber, caramel hues, slightly cloudy, large sand colored foamy head, with super sticky lacing. Belgian yeast nose, bready with some dark pitted fruit notes. Banana bread and fig/date on first sip. Slightly rich, with a hint of dark pitted fruit and licorice. Body and mouthfeel are full to medium. Finishes like a wheaty banana bread with fig/date preserves. Pretty damn tasty!
FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Jan 25, 2005 Pours a brilliantly clear full amber color with ruby highlights when held up to the light. It is topped by a thin light brown head and has a persistent level carbonation. The aroma is full and rich with sweet notes of fruit, and alcohol. I get aromatic notes of raisins, dried plums, figs, rum, and brandy. The taste is light and fizzy up front with a fruity sweetness throughout, though the sweetness is light and in line with the light palate of this beer. This beer is predominantly fruity with notes of concentrated plum, raisin, and fig. The alcohol that was evident in the nose is nicely muted in the taste. This is a solid example of the Belgian Dubbel, it is perhaps a bit too clean, but that has it’s niceties, no higher alcohols or off astringencies. bkelley68 (467), Lakewood, Ohio, USA Jan 24, 2005 Reddish brown body with a whispy white head. Wow, this ahs a lt of banana in the aroma. Light notes of fruit and carmel, too. Tasty brew. Fruity, yet malty and complex with a yesty tang. The banana is there in the flavor, too. Carbonation was a tad ’sharp’ for me. Overall a tasty beer, but in a blind tasting, I would have guessed it was a dunkelweissen. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 21, 2005 I generally don’t like New Belgium products but I have to give credit where credit is due. This one isn’t completely overrated like their others. Really fruity aroma which I like. Spicy(cloves?) & slightly dry to the palate. Banana flavors. Some roasty malty flavors too. Basically it has everything I like so it’ll score well but I seriously doubt I’ll drink it again unless I was in a pinch. ChazyRPh (571), Chazy, New York, USA Jan 21, 2005 bottle...clear amber pour with a medium beige head. Big banana aroma as I was pouring, and after as well. Some yeast, some spiciness. Mostly banana though. Yeastly, banana flavor to start. Pepperiness kicks in toward the middle, and the end is a little sweet with some fruit. High carbonation, however I do not see the typical yeast floating around in this beer. I get too much banana or is it bubblegum for my liking.
