Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle from Cody, thanks! Dark brown color. Slightly roasted aroma with dark chocolate and pear. Roasty flavor with dark chocolate, raisin and hints of cinnamon. Sweetish but pleasant abbey ale, without being world shocking.

Bottle courtesy of unclemike.Aroma of yeast and sweet malts. Amber body with good head and gusher after takeing off cap. Had a 27APR09 date on bottle. Sweet hard candy flavor along with some yeasty bread notes. Filling beer and sweetness lingers on palate.

Clear amber brown pour with thin tan head and some lacing. Nose of light banana and hints of alcohol. Flavor has a little nutty breadiness to it. Sweet and malty. Medium creamy body with moderate carbonation. Good example of a dubbel.

This is like a classic abbey double light. The look is there, but just a bit lighter in color. The aroma has some of the belgian yeast, but more malt comes through. Same with the taste. I actually enjoyed it for what it is.

Bottle pours a beige lacing head and a clear brown head with amber highlights. Smells of ripe fruit, banana, yeast, and brown sugar. Taste is the same. Mouthfeel is fine carbonation. The finish is smooth, sweet, fruit and banana.

Bottle. Pours a slight ruby brown amber with off white head. I’m not a huge fan of this type of beer but i must admit it is pleasing. Malt on the nose. Sweet and to the point. Have another? I can dig it.

Pours a nice dark brown with ruby-tinged highlights. Aroma of caramel and malt sweetness. Taste has minute bitterness with a nice amount of caramel malt taste and a hint of belgian yeast flavor to back it up. Pretty decent, but not overly-complex.

Brownish red. Flavor of a light abbey ale. Almost a rice sweetness. Caramel and a light bitterness.
