Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle, pours a walnut like red hue with little head. Aroma of caramel, light banana spice and smooth malts. Taste is a little choclately sweet. Balance is very good.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a one finger light tan head that results in decent lacing. The nose is banana, caramel and spicy yeast. The taste is spice, cocoa, burnt caramel and banana. Medium bodied. Decent Belgian – better than anticipated.

Courtesy of vasdef42. Another great New Belgium offering that in my opinion tops the Trippel. Pours dark brown with beige head. Aroma is fruity with notes of dark sugar and possibly some light smoke. Banana becomes more present with temperature. Taste, roasted malts with nice addition of dark candi. Some faint chocolate can be noted in the aftertaste with cooked apples sugar. Notes of sweet banana becomes more prominent as the beer came to room temperature. That was one tasty beer.

From the bottle pours a translucent, reddish-amber shaded body with a small, foamy, beige colored head. A soapy wash slides down the glass after each sip, leaving minimal spotting behind. Aromas include dark candy sugar malt, candied orange peel, coriander, and light mulling spices. Notes of bubblegum and banana phenols are strong as well. Flavors show the same, with candy sugar and caramel malts being complimented nicely by the banana, orange peel, and spice. The body is a little light for the style, though the carbonation level is nice and creamy. A bit of cocoa roast comes through on the finish, which is nice.

Crushed with CaryTheDude and Jakebra at the brewery. Weird, raisiny smell. There’s some kind of roast in here and a lot of apples, pears, etc. Flavor is a bit off putting, with apples nuts and a weird off flavor. Drinkable, yet inspiring dubbel.

Crushed with Jakebra and Honkeybra at the brewery. Interesting but also kinda bland. Sweet malt, apples, a little nutty. Not terrible.

Pours reddish amber with a good amount of head. Nose is a bit faint with hints of banana, spices, and dark fruits. Taste is smooth ripe banana, spices, and dark fruits with a yeasty finish. Very drinkable and typical of the style.
