Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Deep mahogany pour with a thin, biscuit dough colored head. Obviously filtered. Belgian yeast on the nose.....cloves, bubblegum and banana bread. Sweet and malty flavor, baking spices (predominantly cloves), bananas, brown sugar, and baseball card bubblegum. A medium body offering....I like my Dubbels a little thicker and bottle conditioned. Finishes sweet with a bitter metallic quality. Fair.

Originally rated on 9/21/08. One of New Belgiums best offerings to date, Abbey delivers as promised. Aroma of dried fruits, and spicey cloves also lend themselves to the flavor which also has some slightly earthy and floral notes. The body is a reddish brown with a thick off white head. Overall a really good beer thats worth your time

Pours a clear dark copper color. Some little floaties in there, probably yeast. About one finger tan head. Okay retention, good lacing.

Aroma is medium roasted malt, smoky, dark fruits and nutty. There’s also a touch of banana.

Taste is well balanced. It leans sweet, not bitter, not sour. Dark fruits, maybe some caramel and chocolate in there. There is pecan in there.

Mouthfeel is not as heavy as I would expect, medium light at most. Can’t taste the alcohol at all. It’s creamy.

Overall, wow! This is great. It’s complex, it’s flavorful. Absolutely, I would recommend this. I would totally buy this again. Yes!

12fl oz bottle poured into a Rochefort trappist chalice. Dark amber with plenty of bubbles, very little head. Lots of bubblegum in the nose (literally- I dipped my nose in it while sniffing it!), heavy on the candy sugar. Same mass of candy in the flavor, some banana and alcohol. Good but almost too sweet.

Deep amber pour with white foamy head. Lots of caramel and malt sweetness yet easy to drink and refreshing. Excellent beer for any occasion. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On the New Belgium tour. Geez, I thought I’d already rated this but it was the Tripel... Reddish bright brown color with a rich aroma and nice plum flavor. this is a classic dubbel. Apparently the yeast was hand imported from Belgium back when the guy was still a homebrewer after being given to him by a local homebrewer who’d cultivated it from trappist brews. Very cool and to style.
