COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Clear Reddish amber. Smells like bananas. Foamy. Very dynamic. Several layers of malts. Very enjoyable.

"sampled one after a chimay taste-off, and it was slightly better than the chimay dubble. more lively and fruitier, with a more pleasant nose and flavor...slightly. good beer, not great."

Riktigt trevlig.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber. Large frothy off white head. Sweet aroma of bananas and cloves. Big lacing. Taste is traditional Belgium sweetness of caramel and raisins. I like this, but it just didn’t wow me. In a world of so many great craft beers this didn’t stand out.

Delicious beer.. Just spent a week in bruges and Brussels trying about 20 beers. This one almost tops them all.

Taster at brewery. Pours brown with a khaki head. Leaves trace lacing. Nice malty sweet notes on the nose. Kind of sweetly malty on the tongue. Very quaffable. It goes down so easy. Finished clean. Nice.

Poured from 12oz bottle a dark copper hue, with a small to medium sized head and a little lacing. Aroma is yeasty ,fruity with lots of malt and banana accents along with some spiciness. Rich and complex in flavour: maybe a hint of fig, some raisins, a bit of a woods and earthy leaves. Still, a bit of a metallic unpleasantness in the aftertaste. A fair attempt at a dubbel, but nowhere near as good as the real thing. Decent enough, but not really my style either.

Classic version of a classic style. The yeast character works nicely in concert with the malt to give the subtle fruitiness, without being overbearing. Delicious caramel/toffee quality, moderate dark aged fruit note. It’s no wonder that it’s won so many medals.

UPDATED: OCT 2, 2014 (Bottle) Wonderful aroma: slight banana, some spiciness and other fruitiness. Certainly not the best dubbel but still quite good.

Belgian easters in the aroma together with caramel and raisins. The taste is caramel, raisins, plums and hints of chocolate. Also some belgian esters in the background.

Tastes a little different for the style but still very good. A little bready with some banana. More British character and less of the sweet candi sugar than most dubbels. Some caramel too, but its a bitter caramel. The carbonation level is just right and it has a frothy, lingering head. A pretty easy-drinking dubbel.
