Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

A deep red beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet yeasty and malty with slight notes of burnt malt. The flavor is sweet malty with quite a lot of caramel and yeast, combined with lighter spicy notes. The alcohol burns slightly in the throat, and mixes with a dry spicy end.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy orangey brown with a beige head. Aroma of yeast, fruit and roasted malt. Medium-bodied with some sweet, roasted malt, dried fruit and yeast. Not overly thrilling. 191206

Nut brown. Dry, bitter fruity and estery. A nice and complex succesful attempt to make a Belgian style double dark

A beautiful burgundy colour, a bubblegummy, cherry and christmas fruitcake aroma, and a palate of dark fruits, malty and a warming alcohol finish. A complex, balanced, tasty beer.

Dark chestnut color; big creamy head. Delicate aroma of caramel and roasted malt, perfumy, elegant. Medium body strength; the flavor is too much monodimensional for my liking: caramel only. Professionally brewed, with a good choice of yeast.

(7/28/02): Clear copper with off-white head. Aroma is medium sweet, orange, light coriander. Taste is much the same, finishing with a light alcohol burn. Medium full body. My description doesn't do it justice, but this is a very well-balanced and appealing beer. (4/5/02): Big head atop a clear red-brown body, with a sweet aroma. The flavor isn't as sweet, but it's light and the foaminess on the tongue dissolves into warm bliss. Fruity, light malty. A bit of bitterness as it goes down the throat, but not much. As it warmed up, the aftertaste turned slightly metallic. (8/4/8/4/15)
