Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle: Poured a darker than expected brown/amber color with a nice head. Aroma is yeast and fruit, very true to the style. Taste is a well balanced fruity, nutty, malty, and spicey blend. Complex, yet smooth.

Spicy, somewhat dry, and dark and bitter in the finish. An great beer. I like the tripel more, but this isn't bad. Rerate, 10-04: Dark brown with a nice thin head. Candi sugar in the aroma. Malty palate defined with some nice bananna esters. Bitterness in the finish. Great stuff.

8/4//06 Bottle shared by Blake. Clear dark brown body under a an off-white scattering of bubbles. Raisin, phosphory rubber, and brown sugar in the nose. Not as much sweetness in the flavor - toasty caramel and raisin under nicely bitter lemon peel and grass. I like this Americanized (bitter) dubbel.

A medium strong and very pleasant sweet bubblegum, curacao, aroma. Very clean though slightly creamy. Yes, there is some coffee and fig and both are bright and appreciated. The body is medium and may feel a bit wet by comparison to the heaviest of this breed. The finish is fairly dry with some fruit sour and not fully dampened hops. A very good show! I’m all about the front end with the better part of the experience coming before or during the first sip. This beer has all that. Dank u wel, Mister Gusler!

Ruby brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of candied sugar, grapes and some bready malts. Tastes quite sweet and malty with some nutty overtones. Noticeable yeast throughout.

Poured brown with medium tan head and moderate lacing. Nose of yeast, malt, and spices. Palate a bit fizzy. Flavor fruity. Good finish. Nice for winter.

Large, rocky tan head, good retention and plenty of lace. Dark amber, red hued color. Spicey, fruity nose, faint citrus and sugar. Medium body, lightly creamy. Medium sweet maltiness, dark fruit flavors, overipe bananna. Malty. A fairly dry finish. Thanks to whaleman for this one.
