Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

33cl bottle. Pours out a sparking copper colour. The aroma to me seemed rather earthy. Good quality dubbel that is approaching a proper Belgian beer.

The head formed quickly when it was poured from the bottle. The head was slightly brown in tint and the beer was a dark amber, almost like maple syrup. Strong, noticable roasted malt flavor and aroma. The taste was a combination of the roasted flavor, yeast and a hint of sweetness, from maybe caramel or syrup. The alcohol presence is noticeable.. not in a negative way.

Lovely fresh caramel, woody aromatics. Nice, clear ruby color. Earthy, fruity flavor with some bubblegum notes. Clean and good, but not as complex as it’s Belgian brothers.

Thanks to Johnny Flake for this one. Pours amber/brown, with an off-white head. Aromas are malt, yeast, spice, and bubblegum. Flavors are malt, spice, and yeast. starts a little sweet and ends dry. A nice beer.

Dark bubbly amber color with a beige head. Aroma and flavor of yeast, peppery spices, fruit and some hops. Wow!

Bottle from my friend who returned with this from Colorado. Pours a dark amber color. The beer has a sweet, malty aroma, with a touch of spice.

Aroma of sweet candy sugar. Pours dark amber. Tastes of sweet malt, candy sugar, and a bit fruity. A bit thin for a dubbel.

Clear amber body, medium sized beige head; Very pleasant fresh nose, soft licorice spicy, very nice but a little to small; Very pleasant fresh bitter sweet balanced body, big soft carbonation, very good, very drinkable, but to small; To short finish all the right feels and all the right aromas, just not enough of it. Very nice, very drinkable and actually very good, but for a BE abbey dubble it is way to small.
