Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Deep, dark, somewhat cloudy ruby reddish color. Bubblegum lingers in the aroma. Malt, yeast, some hops maybe? Nice, light, smooth taste. Banana, caramel, and some assorted fruit. A definitely good brew!!

Bottle. Very dark amber. Smells like sour garbage. Really sour and tart taste. Carbonated garbage. Awful aftertaste. Do not want again. I do not get all the hype and excitement about this beer at all.

Nice darker than expected red-brown pour with a solid tan head. Nice roasty yeast smell with a hint of some spice and some dried fruit. Nice spicy dark fruit flavor with a hint of bubblegum and some yeast. Very tasty offering from a brewery I usually find it easy to discount.

Clear deep Ruby color with massive foamy tan head. Nice lacing. Good Belgian flavor, not as complex as the top-notch Belgian ales. A bit thin feeling but still a nice US made Belgian.

Mahogany color with a small head. Aroma is malty with hints of plums and nuts. Yeasty with a dark fruit flavor, hints of pepper and corriander in the finish.

Nose is fresh and fruity, with lots of banana and cherry presence. Also, fig and spice. Medium body creates a nice transport for more banana and plum. The body has a nice depth, soft carbonation, fruit yeastiness and somewhat roasty finish. Really good!

Bottle. Sampled most recently at Monk’s cafe New Belgium dinner 4/10/07. Poured dark amber with a thick, creamy tan head. Sweet caramel aroma, with notes of yeast, banana bread, liquorice, anise, and orange. Malty body, with dark chocolate, liquorice and yeast flavor. very tasty.
