Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a deep brown color with a light beige head. Aroma of some fruits, mostly banana, and bubble gum. Malty entry with some caramel leads into a yeasty middle with hints of fruity esters such as banana and a soft bubble gum finish. Unfortunately, this is a below-average beer now, but it used to be much better, and devoid of the over-whelming bubble gum notes.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a nice creamy which settles into a thin foam, nice dark brownish color with some reddish hues, nose is malty, yeasty, minimal spice, initial taste is flat then malt, yeast and mild hop bitter come in, pleasant but slight metallic finish. Mouth feel O.K.

Poured dark brown with a reddish hue to it. This was actually a pretty good belgian dubbel. Aroma was yeast, dark fruits, and malty with some yeast coming through. Flavor was pretty rich and malty. A little alcohol came through and maybe the slightest metallic taste. Very solid beer though.

Had on tap at City Beer in SF. Poured a very nice dark amber brown color. Sweet malty smell. Taste was sweet malts, a bit of citrus, and bananna...A VERY mild, and wayyyy too drinkable dubbel...I was giddy after one glass that I most likely drank way too fast!

The high alcohol content and extremely apparent fruitiness almost makes this beer taste like wine at times. An excellent beer nonetheless. (This was the first belgain ale I'd ever had, and seeing as how I was probably not only giving this a good rating for merit but for innovation as well, I would probably rate it lower if I were to try it again, but that day has not come yet.)

I would’ve rated this one higher but the taste of banana kind of overwhelmed all the other flavors that I was looking forward to tasting...the fig, caramel, cloves, etc.

Amber color and pours with a medium to thin sized head but pretty good retention and lacing throughout. Aroma consists of candy apples, cherry, plums, raisins, sugar. Drinks lighter and thinner than it smells but still quite good. Moderately sweet and sugary flavors showing raisins, plums, maple, yeast, vanilla and light spice. I like this one. Very drinkable and tasty.

12 oz bottle-trade w/after4ever. Poured a dark brown color w/a moderate tan foamy head & good lacing. Nutty, roasted, grassy, Belguim aroma. Sweet, fresh, crisp, nutty flavor with a lot of carbination, reminds you a little of a brown ale. Definite classic Belgium flavor. Long finish-very refreshing. Another good brew from New Belgium. Thanks for this one Tom!!!
