COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Pours a dark amber brown with a thin off white head. Aroma is caramel, dark fruit, overripe banana, faint chocolate, hints of roasted nuts, spicy hops and black pepper. Flavor is sweet caramel, bread crust, dark fruit, chocolate, earthy autumn forest, banana bread, hints of stone fruit and limestone. Palate is medium bodied, slightly slick and creamy on entry, neutral and fairly strongly carbonated in the middle and chalky and off dry on the finish. Pretty good, nothing to rave about, but a good solid Dubbel at a great price.

One of the more solid brews from New Belgium. Bottle pours a bright golden-orange color with a thin, off-white, fizzy head. The aroma is pretty lively with intertwining notes of bananas, carmel apples, pears and hay. The taste is typical of a belgian double with some brown sugar on the front palate, leading into a touch of alcohol, and following up with a spicy finish. Overall a pretty easy drinking brew, with a nice dry finish.

Actually had this one in a mOvie theater while watching the immortals. Really good quaffable Belgium flavors. Those darknfruits and candi sugars in an easy drinker. Well done

I like this more every time I dring it. Head was small but laced really well, kind of plum and caramel and fruitcake flavor, all in a good way. Less yeasty than some of the Belgians I've had, but a very very good dubbel.

Pours an effervescent clear mahogany with a creamy off-white head. Light caramel and yeasty esters dominate the nose: bubble gum, plum and black cherry. Medium-bodied, I found this beer to be extremely dry, wicking almost all moisture from my tongue. Sweet, yeasty and malty with notes of plum, bubblegum, wood and white pepper with a light alcohol on the exhale. A nice beer, albeit a bit dry for my tastes.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2009 Bottle pours a beige lacing head and a clear brown head with amber highlights. Smells of ripe fruit, banana, yeast, and brown sugar. Taste is the same. Mouthfeel is fine carbonation. The finish is smooth, sweet, fruit and banana.

Pours a dark amber brown color with medium bubbly light tan head. Aroma is nutmeg, clove, yeast, and raisins. Flavor brown sugar, raisinbread and a bit of dry bitter burn. Overall, very nice beer, makes a good night cap.

Bottled, thanks Slothgar! Transparent and slightly bubbly deep color pour with a light tan head, nose of malts and corn, a bit medicine-y, but the sweetness goes away in the body leaving a well balanaced maltiness, somewhat smokey. Good!
