Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

bottle. amber pour. bananas, gum, yeast, bread and fruit in the aroma. Flavor is pretty full and has some spices, banana, yeast and maybe even a hint of light chocolate.

Delicious blend of cherries and malt in a sour and rich balanced lambic delight. I am truly amazed by the availability of such a great Dubbel at my local grocery store!

Aroma is harsh burnt malts with banana and honey with little else. Appearence is a clear light brown with some red and a smallish head. Taste is odd, not anything like an Abbey Dubbel. Tastes like a watery porter but with elements of the aroma, not the biggest fan. Goes down dry and fizzy. Suprised at the 92 percentile.

Bottle. Brownish beer with a good beige head. Understated maly sweetness, spice, and bubblegum in the aroma. Nice rich malt with banana and spice and yeast in the flavor. Wish there was just a little more richness to it. Fruit (grape and plum) with a bit of earthiness. Complex, but just lacking a bit to put it at the next level.

Thanks to csbosox for sending this. Pours a clear brown color with a ring of offwhite lace. Aroma of smoked malt (?), caramel and alcohol. Flavor of caramel, malt and yeast. Light body, dry mouthfeel and soft carbonation. It’s good but I consider that a Dubbel should be better than that.

Great Americanized version of a Belgian Ale. Very appealing amber color with a very thick beige head and good lacing. As a matter of fact I had some spillage that may have been the result of shipping (thanks PhillyBeer2112!). Nice spicy and fruity aroma. Nicely complex flavor consisting of bananas, alcohol, and some other fruits. This is definitely a worthy effort at the Belgian style from a stateside brewer!

Bottle pours dark amber, caramel hues, slightly cloudy, large sand colored foamy head, with super sticky lacing.   Belgian yeast nose, bready with some dark pitted fruit notes.   Banana bread and fig/date on first sip.   Slightly rich, with a hint of dark pitted fruit and licorice.   Body and mouthfeel are full to medium.   Finishes like a wheaty banana bread with fig/date preserves.   Pretty damn tasty!

In short: A sweet spicy Belgian-candy beer. More like a light Belgian Christmas beer than a Abbey Dubbel. Not bad, not a Dubbel, not worth it.
How: Bottle 12oz, from BeerAndBlues2, thanks a lot Brad! Drank some 6 months after the trade so the bottle probably was about 1 year old.
The look: Clear ruby body with a medium beige of head
In long: A unusual mix of flavours for a so-called Abbey Dubbel. Barley candies, bananas, cloves, dark grapes, cinnamon and some cherries. Body is a bit slimy/sticky and with some kind of tar feeling (not a compliment). Finish has some cherries sourness and barley candies sweetness. Not a bad really but this is not Abbey Dubbel. I prefer Abbey Dubbels from Old Belgium, you know, that 12,000 square-miles brewery.
