Commercial Description:
Abbey is brewed in the style of a Belgian "Double" ale. It is brown in color, with a full body and a distinctive fruity aroma. Abbey is fermented with an authentic Belgian yeast strain, and is refermented in the bottle to produce natural carbonation. A small amount of live yeast remains in the bottle giving the beer a freshness and fullness of character. The beer should be served cool (not cold) to best experience the rich aroma and complex flavors.

Bottled, BB 5/9/08. Poured crystal clear garnety-amber with at least a couple inches worth of sticky beige head. The aroma was dry with peppery spices and cloves over sweet plums and other dark fruits.. nice components, but there was an overriding airy detergent character to it. The flavor was just what I was looking for.. initial white peppery impression with a dark fruit and dry caramel backing.. fruity middle with a big, Belgian-y yeast footprint.. dry finish with the aforementioned fruit, faint chocolate, and caramel.. very well-balanced and enjoyable. Medium-bodied and dry on the palate with peppery yeast and cloves very well interlaced. Very good brew!

Pours a nice semi-clear dark amber with a THICK head. Aroma is incredibly rich: toffee, cinnamon, nutmeg. Other smells that I can’t quite describe. So far, this beer is amazing! Let’s see how it tastes. Flavor is toffee, vanilla, and carbon dioxide. It’s not bad, but not as rich as the aroma. Palate is about average; smooth, not particularly silky or anything. I think the carbonation gets in the way of the flavor a bit.

Candied mixed fruit nose with some baking spice, some dough and dust. Really dark reddish brown, almost opaque, lacing abounds after a nice 2 finger head. At first the beer had a metallic bite on the finish but that went away, I blame it on the carbonation, the beer was complete and not overly complex, a little more yeast balance would be nice. Overall, very nicely made brew at the right price, great intro to real belgian dubbels.

Pours brown with red to orange highlights and a moderate off-white head. Aroma is nice and fruity, bananas, apples some toast and caramel. Flavor fits the same description to me, but it’s smoothness stood out to me. Finish was pretty interesting, like it was some sort of earthy banana counterpart. Medium bodied, lightly textued for the style, but good and mostly authentic. You can’t find a better dubbel for the price that’s for damn sure!

Dark brown color with red highlights and a large slightly off-white head. Aroma is full of sweet banana and caramel with an element of spice. The flavor seems a bit thin at first after such a pleasant aroma. Fizzy mouthfeel. Enjoyable enough.
