Lots of complex fruit esters present with a rather dry but balanced finish. Alcohol comes through as it warms, but not in an obtrussive way. Overall quite delicous. Cloudy with sediment, dark brown/red, small/medium creamy thick lasting head. Seemed to be very lively in the carbonation department. Initial aroma of fresh spiced clove, yeast, banana, caramel apples, and sweet light alcohol. Flavor is wonderful, starts creamy on the tongue, slight dark/roast malt base, spices(cinnamon), banana, apple, pear, and finishes with a lingering yeasty fruity sweet twang. Body is medium/heavy creamy, smooth, and coating. Nice!! ColoradoBobs (31), Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 21, 2005 Bottle-conditioned: 355 ml (i.e. 12 oz) bottle, as in the picture. Served at about 45 degrees, just a bit cooler than the 50 degrees recommended on the bottle. As the glass warmed, things got better and better.
Dark red/brown, mahogany color with a smallish head that gives way to just a persistent light lace. Nice appearance.
Smell is definitely fruity (raspberry and cherry?) with some chocolate and fig.
Taste is chocolatey, sweetly dark and rich like figs, with a depth of toasted malt in the aftertaste. Also picked up some pepper and grapefruit (!). Not overly toasty, just warm and rich. I’m sure there are some hops in there somewhere, but their presence is delightfully subtle. The alcohol is there but masked by the spicey fruit and pepper.
Mouthfeel is where this beer delights! So smooth and round, you want to swirl it around in your mouth! Mmmm.
Perhaps a bit too rich for drinking many of these --- two or three is the limit. The alcohol limits consumption a bit as well.
I really enjoy the yeast in this beer -- it’s ALIVE! Overall, a really nice American example of the style. BigNasty (55), South Lyon, Michigan, USA

Quite possibly NBB’s most consistent beer in terms of flavor from purchase to purchase. Slight cloudy brown color and wonderful banana/clove/bubblegum flavor. Nice smooth mouthfeel makes this easy drinking for such a flavorful beer. Oxymoron (104), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 19, 2008 Pours a darker a amber color with a egg shell white head that remains throughout the tasting. The beer smells sweet with caramel notes and some bready and banana esters. The taste is great with a stronger malt presence that quickly makes way for the sweet yeast and hops and finishes with cloves and bananas. The taste stays with you after you finish drinking. Other flavors began to emerge as well, such as cinnamon, apples and slight plums.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 24, 2006 This beer is very well done thought its style is all its own..not quiet a dubbel but close. Aromas of aromatic malt and belgian yeast but no too fruity. Esters are restrained but the yeast comes though well. This beer is all about balance and elegance. Very smooth and became a bit creamy when it warmed up a bit. Lacks a bit of the complexity in some of the best true belgian abbeys. None the less better than alot of the belgian examples iv had. Probably fresher and less oxidized than shit thats been across the pond. Recomended! beertime (23), Minnesota, USA

The aroma is of corriander, banana, and oarange typical of the style. Sweet mouthfeel with a citrus finish. An excellent brewery for Belgium style beers. Known for Fat Tire Amber Ale but if you get a chance try all of thier beers. RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 10, 2007 Wow. Okay. Finally something redeeming from NB. Pours a slightly cloudy ruby. Nose is very like, well, a Belgian brew. Yeasty with a sweet and citric tone. Taste is very good. Smooth and even. You get that slightly sweet edge that comes and goes with the rolling of the flavors. Overall a very good brew I think. Recently I was getting so irritated at the lack of interesting stuff from NB that I was about to just write the whole brewery off. But this one is redemption in a bottle. Damn good. The feel is slightly thick, but a bit lighter than some other Belgian brews. Definitely drinkable.
