Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Deep brown with flashes of red and a small head. Aromas of spicy fruits, bananas and yeast come through pretty strong. Soft malty base with a sugary sweetness and a complex fruit flavor. Quick, clean, roasted finish leaves a good taste behind. Seems to be slightly thin and more fizzy than usual for a dubbel, otherwise really good.

Nice fruity aroma and taste with pear and liquorice as well. This beer shows some of its alcohol as it warms, but not objectionably. Smooth and tasty.

Not thoroughly impressed. It pours nicely. Both hoppy and malty, but just not extremely impressive. It just doesn’t beat the Trippel.

Lathering atop the brown mass was pure cream..shrinking as I watched..
the aroma brought on memories of children skipping banana chips along the spicy sea...
warm acid carmel, figs..(I"m not trying to copy the commercial description here, but it is very accurate...)..A touch of cherry candy injected with a coriander/nutmeg blend... re-rate: yeasty, kinda like i remember the chimay red..

Dark amber with a layer of off white bubbles. Really great aroma of caramel, bubblegum, light roasted malts, touch of cloves and bananas, and a faint smokiness. Sweet flavor with a semi sweet finish that has a nice roasty character. Good stuff.

Beautiful nut brown color and creamy, tan head. Fruity aromas and flavors, with a little spice. Flavors are banana, plum, fig, grape. There’s a pleasant sweetness that is balanced by the dry, subtley hopped finish.

Spicy and malty nose. The head is small bubbles and hangs out a while. Nice balanced sweet and toffe like. Like all NB beers this is nice to drink.
