COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

12oz bottle. Clear brown color with a small beige head. Toasty and slightly nutty malt aroma with a touch of scorched raisin. Dry and toasty malt flavor with lots of bread and burnt fruit. Lighter feel but a little alcohol underlying. Standard carbonation. Well done for a filtered, non-bottle-conditioned dubbel but lacks the soul of the real thing. Quite a deal though and I can see going for this again when I want a few dubbels without breaking the bank. I’d take this over their trippel any day.

Some good bang for your buck. Most places sell this at the same price as all other 6-packs and at 7%ABV this can be efficient.

Tawny appearance with a large beige head that faded quickly and left spotty lacing. Yeasty aroma of dark fruit and light spiciness. Residual sweetness in the flavor as the caramel malts show up. Spicy notes found in the aroma are still there along with a hint of tobacco. Faint herbal hop presence in the aftertaste. Creamy, medium bodied mouthfeel and a long lasting finish. A great bargin.

Dark copper color with a beige head. Nose: Caramel malt, dried fruit, yeast, bread, resin and banana. Taste: About the same as the aroma, dried fruit, caramel malt, brown sugar, spice, cinnamon and bread. Body: Medium, complex body with a beatiful softness. I really like this Dubbel!

Bottle at Goehners house for Oktoberfest. Pours brown with one finger of head. Aroma is malty and some town sugar. Flavor follows with some yeastiness. Nice beer but pretty sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Brown sugar sweet character, with a lot of estery yeast. Raisin-like fruit. Flavor also has some caramel malt, and banana-like yeast flavor.

Pours pours medium amber, nice head. Aroma bananas bread, dried fruit. Flavor follows aroma... banana bread... though not overly sweet. Exceptionally balanced, light and subtly lush at the same time, with a momentary dry note before a lingering light sweetness. Nice, refined.

Deep copper pour with creamy clingy head. Aromas of caramel, bread, yeast, and esters. Flavor is somewhat alcoholic, with heavy malt presence balanced by delicate hops. Somewhat sweet finish has me sipping more...

Searching the beer fridge for an Imperial Stout and came out with a New Belgium Abbey. Everything I love in a Belgian Dubbel including the style bottle. Highly enjoyable and reasonably priced. Need to stock up next time I am in Delaware.
