COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Wonderful aroma: slight banana, some spiciness and other fruitiness. Certainly not the best dubbel but still quite good.

Belgian easters in the aroma together with caramel and raisins. The taste is caramel, raisins, plums and hints of chocolate. Also some belgian esters in the background.

Tastes a little different for the style but still very good. A little bready with some banana. More British character and less of the sweet candi sugar than most dubbels. Some caramel too, but its a bitter caramel. The carbonation level is just right and it has a frothy, lingering head. A pretty easy-drinking dubbel.

Bottle to plastic cup Banana, malt, caramel, brown sugar, and yeast. Reddish amber with a thin, very creamy tan head. Taste is caramel, molasses, malt, bread, cookie, and yeast.

bottle to glass; need to try again - aroma was good, but different for style - spices, malts, banana? nice darker cloudy amber pour. taste was good but not sure it was dubbel; will try again and give more details

Darker brown color with medium white head, flavor full with some bitter flavors with good balance. Would continue to be a New Belgium fan.

Bottle: Rich chestnut & copper body with very mild clarity; chunky, voluptuous ecru cap slowly recedes & leaves some fat lacing spots behind. Aroma of musty bubblegum, doughy yeast esters, faint perfume, stale caramel, & a hint of some dark fruits. Taste is more clove-y & bubblegum forwards, lots of sharp yeast out of the gate. Prunes, red grape, caramel, toast, chunky yeast, & subtle esters linger into the finish. A touch of phenol with a mild medicinal astringency towards the back-end that I don’t exactly dig. A decent dubbel but hard to choose this when so many better, authentic examples are readily available.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours reddish brown with a off white head. Taste belgian yeast, Carmel, fruity. I thought this was good. I would drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

At Spoke at DIA. Dark ruby red pour and a thin beige head. Smells of yeast and dark fruits. Tastes very malty and bready like an abbey double should. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
