Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

12 oz. bottle from Paul U. Reddish brown pour. Nice foamy head. Aroma is that of dark fruit and yeast. Sweet fruity flavor with a clean, smooth finish.

12oz bottle form vasdef42. Pours a dark brown color with thin off-white head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of ripe fruit, chocolate, caramel, honey, grain, yeast, hints of toffee and brown sugar. Flavor seems off to me -- starts out with a nice, chocolate, brown sugar note then turns to a weird funky yeast type flavor. Cant put my finger on it, but I thought I would love this ale. Medium body with a malty funk finish.

Medium brown in the glass. Toasty caramel malt flavors with fruity banana notes as well. Pretty decent abbey dubbel with a more affordable price tag than most worth drinking in this style.

Nice darker color. Its pretty smooth but clean. Its a good beer to drink a sixer to. Any more and your wasting your beer. Its a great beer to hang out and drink and enjoy, with a good alcohol content.

Brown pour with a thin tan head. Smell of chocolates and burnt sugar. Banana notes and malts in the smell and the taste. I think this beer was overly sweet for me but I will give it another go in the future.

I’m sorry, I’m not sure why, but I just really don’t enjoy this ale as much as I think I would. There’s just something about it that I don’t like.

Lots of bubblegum and a bit of clove in the aroma and flavor. Bit of dark fruit as well. Complex. Whole lot going on in this one.

Very impressive DARK amber color. I thought it was brown, until ’lighting’ it. Nice. Minimal head. Minimal lacing. Great dark fruit scents. Dark cherries, dates, figs. Big sweet malts. Banana notes. Caramelish brown sugar notes. Sweet maltiness. Spiciness like cloves. Fresh bread covered in brown sugar run under the broiler so that it carmalizes. Nice dark fruits again. Good body on this one. Nice and creamy. Definite medium level of thickness, here. Very good, very drinkable bottle. This isn’t Chimay, by any means, but it would be an acceptable substitute, at a cheaper price, when finances dictate.
