When we set out to brew, we use imagination and salvation to guide us- not necessarily style guidelines. Itís the Belgian way. So, Ameri-Belgo and IPA both being styles, the branding begged for New Belgium whimsy to liven things up. Hmmm Belgo sounds like a Belgian disco. Hops like to party. Next thing you know, we bust out a disco-ball and brewers started groovin. Hops started hoppin. Add in an authentic Trappist yeast strain and the place brewed into a frenzy of citrus hoppy folly.

Note: Moved to the Explore Series in 2011, making it available year-round.

Bottle. Pour is a light copper with a nice frothy head. Bready, citrus hop aroma. Flavor is right on with a unique Belgian yeast meeting a hoppy IPA. Nothing too strange going one here... all considering. Would definitly have again!

pours a light cloudy orange with a big white head. The taste is sweet citrus with a bitter after taste and a light spicyness.

Belgian aroma with IPA taste. Not bad but not good for someone thatís not an IPA fan.

Blonde with a cloudy white head. Yeast, wheat, cloves, lemon zest on the nose. BIG cloves in the flavour, along with more wheat. Nice malt and hop balance, both understated. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. More wit-like banana/clove in the finish.

chinchill (1863) - South Carolina, USA - NOV 27, 2012
Hazy dark straw with small near-white head. Head is soon gone but leaves a thin ring on top and plenty of lacing. Has a fine aroma with plenty of hops, plus hints of yeast, malt, banana, and spices. Sounds plenty Belgian in this description but actually much more like an Amer. IPA than expected. Slight downgrade to Overall rating for this departure. Body is a bit thin and a little crisp. Semi-dry. O - quite enjoyable, if not the beer I was expecting (which was something more like an Ommegang BIPA). Think of this as a Slightly Belgian IPA.

Pours a cloudy orange with about three fingers of very foamy head. Grapefruit hoppy notes predominant. Citrusy, sweet, with a strong hoppy bitterness to the aftertaste...actually very good.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a white foamy head. Good lacing. Lots of carbonation. Aroma of citrus, banana, and bubble gum. Sweet on the nose but not on the palate. Taste of citrus rinds, hints of bread malts, and leaves. Sticky on the lips. Spicy bitter finish.

Iíll say it right now, i dont generally like belgian style anything. This beer is weak on the hops, weak on aroma and color. big white head, bready yeasty smell with similar flavor, minimal hops. I just dont like these belgian IPAs, not a combination that does anything for me. not complex or interesting at all.

Nice blend of fruity and spicy flavors and aroma from the hops and yeast. Subtle cereal-like malt flavor; sort of like Cheerios or something. Itís interesting, the malt flavors these Belgian yeasts can bring out. Sweeter than I usually like in a Belgian; but with the hopiness, itís not bad.

Kind of a rose/peach color with a slight and very even head. The aroma is the second beer this week to remind me a little bit of Bellís Two Hearted, with rich, bready malts competing with full and aggressive hops. And the flavor is just terrific. This is more IPA than Belgian ale to my palate, but a very good IPA. Strong, pine hops stamped all over a buttery, rich back-end that dominates the finish. I liked this quite a bit and Iíll drink it again.
