Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Tap at Champps in Maple Grove. A crappy chain restaurant so options were minimal. Color is in the amber/copper ballpark. Not a lot of aroma or head. Taste is sort of heavy on malt, a little hops but not well utilized. Aftertaste also fails to impress. Just because it’s everywhere doesn’t mean you should order it.

Tap. Pint glass. Copper with small white head and good lacing. Not much aroma . Malty. Fairly flat. Mostly one note taste. Some hop bitterness at the end. Well distributed but not well made. New Belgium has much better beers than this.

Smells like a lightly toasted biscuit. Mild hop aroma, which I don't perceive as fruity. Gold with a nice-lookin off white head that sticks around. Very clear. Also tastes like a biscuit, with enough hop flavor to balance the malt. Maybe a little nutty? Quickly becoming one of my go-tos for a balanced, easy drinking beer.

Great overall beer that I enjoy when I go to the US. Lots of flavour but has a high drink ability if you were to have 2 or 3

From bottle. Pours cloudy amber, smaller head, good lacing. Smells of salted caramel, dough. Taste is caramel, sweet, citrus. Nice refreshing amber ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours light clear amber, white head. Nose is metallic mineral water, dampened floral and citrus. Flavour is very bland, with floral and mineral water. some caramel. Finish is like a gin and tonic with lemon without the gin. Thin.

Wow this isn’t that great, picked it up thinking "It’s an American craft classic, must be better than the local offerings!" but nope, fell victim to that mentality once again. I have this perception that the big American brewers are miles ahead of the ones up here but New Belgium seems to be proving me wrong. I’d say it was old but other ratings are describing the same blandness. When they open a brewpub in Lloydminster this is probably what their amber will taste like.

Clear amber body w/ off-white head & great lacing. Roasty malt & lightly floral aromas. Caramel, toffee malt flavors w/ nice hoppy back end and dry finish. Well-balanced brew that is quite enjoyable.

Aroma is a slight maltiness but mostly citrus hops and some earthy notes. Body is a light amber with a thin head that retains well.

Tap, amber with a cream colored head. Has a nice bready, caramel taste with a little bit of spice.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a clear amber colored body that yields a nice lumpy yet foamy one finger white head and lasts for a good minute and a half. No carbonation is seen rising. Some light spider web lacing is left. The smell has some sweet light hints of caramel coming in and out with each different sniff. The taste is toasty and brings back the caramel really strong while adding a decent yet subtle flavoring of hops. A very nice crisp aftertaste adds to this. The palate is about a light to medium with nothing harsh on the tongue, and is very sessionable. Overall, this is a pretty good beer for its style that I could have again with its respectable food.
