Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Very sweet profile, with lots of malt. Reddish brown color. Decent amount of head. Some spice. Good but could use a little more hops and a tad sweet.

"toasty, with a malty nuttiness usually only found in an americanized irish red, but hoppier like an amber. pretty nice balance and thicker mouthfeel...to be the best, though, the flavor/aroma isn’t where i needed it to be."

330ml bottle poured in a tulip glass. Enjoyed during my trip to Pleasanton, California at the Marriott Hotel. Nice beer. Its bottle is for sure a tribute to the Belgium Trappists. A: Pours a nice clear dark amber color with a reasonable head which dissipates leaving some lacings S: Caramel malts, basically. Sweet and biscuity. Light fresh hops T: Follows the nose: Very bready and biscuity (this is the most biscuity beer I’ve ever had). However not sweet as the smell (fortunately). Light citrus hop bitter end M: Light body, reasonable carbonation D: Good beer. Quite unique [ BA Review @ 12/14/2010 ]

Aroma: bread and grains, some caramel. Appearance: hazy amber, no head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: grain malts, some caramel. Overall: OK Amber, but nothing too exciting. Bottle at the Freakin’ Frog, Las Vegas.

Smells a little bit funky and gross, luckily the flavor is not so gross. The flavor is slightly funky but what really stands out is the extremely soft mouth feel, low acidity and carbonation. Very low hops and bitterness but that is clearly not the point if this beer and the complex malt flavors will develop slowly in the aftertaste. Different, and interesting.

Semi-bitter aftertaste, which makes it not a smooth amber ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Solid ale, a little cloudy in color, but a great craft beat that is widely distributed. Gently hoped, clean finish, robust flavor.

Well I’ve had this a few times. Draft this time. Amber pour with tan head. Light herbal and malty aromas. Flavors are malty, light fruit and spice.
