Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Pretty good amber. I enjoy most things that new Belgium does. Of course this is their first

Thanks for sharing! Sampled 650 ml. bottle @ Leuven Innovation Beer Festival. A real classic in a way. Amber, little white head. Nose is hugely metallic with thin caramel malts,… Taste is metallic & hugely so with thin caramel malts, very boring, light sugar & metallic taste dominates,… Thin & metallic taste, very dull. Glad to have tried it but it is indeed pointless as I have heard. Maybe a decent transition beer?

Classic Colorado craft beer, tasted many years ago but lost the notes, fortunately I got a new chance yesterday at the Leuven Innovation Beer Festival. Sticky, moussy, off-white head, clear orange blonde colour. Straightforward but pleasant aroma of peach, white grape, red apple, honey, orange peel; fruity taste but ’clean’ and not overly estery, lightly sticky mouthfeel, smooth caramelly and lightly nutty maltiness, sweetish and a bit honeyish too, leafy hops in the finish, only gently bitter. Nice quencher, perhaps a bit obsolete in view of the American beer ’explosion’ that came after it, but it’s always good to revisit the classics.

Probably my favorite amber ale. Very drinkable, but with plenty of flavor. Helped make me a New Belgium fan.

Ambers are not my favorite style by any stretch. That said, this is not a bad beer. Flavor profile is there. Decent enough.

Pours a slightly hazy amber-orange with an off-white head. Aroma of malt, yeast and hops. Tastes of malt and a little yeasty. Thin bodied. Kind of underwhelming.
