COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Frambozen begins with the aroma of fresh red raspberries, followed by the ripe seductiveness of a fruity brown ale with depth and delicate malt notes. It is deep ruby in color, with flavors just as rich. Every year, New Belgium sends a delegate to the Pacific Northwest to oversee the process of turning freshly picked berries into a pure juice to be added in fermentation. The coming of Thanksgiving at New Belgium is ushered in with the first sighting of our cellar operators scuttling about, covered head to tow in a festive crimson berry wash.

Bottle. Smells better than it tastes, but not too bad.

Amber with red hues and pinkish-tan head. Slightly acidic raspberry and cocoa/lightly roasted malt. Watery raspberry tanginess finishing with faint chocolate malt. Dry and watery. Lingering acidity.

Pours a coppery red with a 3 finger, chunky, light beige head. Aroma is seedy raspberries, light nutty notes, sweet malt and planty notes. Flavor is lightly nutty, stale grain, light raspberry, brown malt, planty hops, English Ale-ish yeast and a light EVOO-like plantiness. Meidum bodied, neutral to oily, somewhat dusty and lightly carbonated. Not really what I was expecting from the name, I would have liked something a bit more Belgian in nature or with a bit more raspberry character. Not all that good, but not bad.

Bottle; pour is murky copper/amber, with a khaki head in this glass. Average head, fine bubbled, retains fairly well... With some sticky lacing. The nose is raspberry skins, biscuits, and caramel. The flavor profile is like an Amber ale, with some English style malts.. (biscuits)... Oh. And the modest raspberry. Meh.

12oz bottle from Friar Tuck-Springfield. Pours reddish brown with small off-white head. Aromas of raspberries and caramel malts. Flavors of raspberries, caramel, and bit of sweetness. Maybe chocolate as well in the finish, Very light tartness. Not overly sweet of generically fruity. Not complex and actually a fairly drinkable beer.

Thanks to Ballofruit for this bottle. Served in a SAVOR wine glass. Pours a medium brown color with a good head and a bit of lacing. The nose has a light amount of raspberry with some sweet malt taking up the biggest portion. Flavor has more raspberry, though it’s not all that integrated with the base. Medium body with light sweetness. Boom.

Another fruit beer and already my apprehensions are high (not really a big fan of fruity beers in the first place). However, this is a rather good winter seasonal from NB! Not too fruity and that’s something I can really appreciate as there are some fruit beers out there that are just cloyingly sweet and hard to drink for my preferences. One can really come to appreciate how well-balanced this brew is. As fair as food pairings go, I’m reaching for some homemade vanilla ice cream and having me one snazzy beer float!

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2012 The appearance is ruby red with a tart aroma and faint raspberry smell. Low carbonation, which is perfect for this style of beer. I let this one age for about 6 months before I opened it and I must say the tartness increased significantly. Overall, a great beer for those cold winter nights.
