Commercial Description:
La Folie Wood-Aged Biere, is our original wood-conditioned beer, resting in French Oak barrels between one and three years before being hand bottled, numbered and corked for your enjoyment. Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, came to us from Rodenbach – home of the fabled sour red. Our La Folie emulates the spontaneous fermentation beers of Peter’s beloved Flanders with sour apple notes, a dry effervescence, and earthy undertones.

750 ml. bottle courtesy Buffalohead. Clear copper/bown pour produces a spare, off white head. Sour berries and lots of ruity esters over a layer of oak. Medium body with a squeaky clean palate. As expected, an acidic sour flavor dominates the flavor, although it is not assertively sour. Very pleasant and refreshing, and with the undercurrent of oak there is some nice complexity.

750 mL bottle. Pours a murky brown. Nose is a tart lactic sourness, some hints of wood, sweet malts. Flavor is a very sour punch in the face of sour. Flowery hops, sweet malts balance it out. Some wood, but not much. Dry with slight sweet finish and leaves hints of vinegar and unripe fruits. Love this beer.

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy orangish brown color with an off white head. Aroma of cherries, sour apples, vanilla and wood. Taste is earthy with a tart cherry background. Nice sour flavor that is easy to drink and well balanced. Has a lasting semi dry finish.

75cl bottle. Thanks a lot to Bu11zeye. Pours dark brown with a cloudy reddish hew and a small creamy head on top. Vinous and heavy nose. Cherries, quite tart, oak and balsamic vinegar notes. Dry, salty and sticky. Very tart. This is what I would refer to as an imperial sour. Dope.

For my 1200 rating. Sampled at Barrios’ house for during his memorial day party, courtesy of ScottyP. Bottle #297. Translucent brown pour with purple highlights with quick fading khaki head. Malty, plum, tart cherries. Acidic, but not stingingly so; and sour, but a good balanced sour. Probably the best sour I’ve had.

On tap at Sheffield’s. Pours reddish brown with minimal off-white head. Smells and tastes like sour oak, cherry, lemon.

750ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with tan bubbles that dissipated quickly. Nose is of sour cherries, oak and sour apples. Taste is the same sour cherries, sour apples and oak. Very tasty. Mouthfeel was mouth-puckering sour with some sweetness. This had previously been offered at a local tasting, but I passed then because I had this puppy at home. Had this whole bottle myself and loved it very much. Will have to get again. Best thing I’ve had from New Belgium, by far.
