Commercial Description:
La Folie Wood-Aged Biere, is our original wood-conditioned beer, resting in French Oak barrels between one and three years before being hand bottled, numbered and corked for your enjoyment. Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, came to us from Rodenbach – home of the fabled sour red. Our La Folie emulates the spontaneous fermentation beers of Peter’s beloved Flanders with sour apple notes, a dry effervescence, and earthy undertones.

Bottle thanks to lumpy. Brown with a large frothy beige head. Aroma is tart with berries, apple, raisin, and oak. Taste has a tart zing to it followed by tons of fruit and a dry oak finish.

On tap @ La Bella’s: Thanks to Joey for mentioning this to me otherwise I would have never suspected this to be locally on tap. Poured in a pint glass which I though was a bit weird since it was sour ale but hey it was a local spot that actually carried this, so I was hyped. Color was light shade of brown and not that easily visible through accompanied by a small fizzy short lived head. My nose detected a strange combination of spiced yeast and sweetened malts that genuinely smelt appetizing. The flavor was over bearing with sourness which sent my taste buds into shock and intensified the drink even further which was what I was completely expecting. Slight similarities to a medium red wine recent in vintage years but also beer like and more up my alley in the category of wood barrels and alcohol. In summary, I enjoyed this offering from New Belgium and only wish I could of furthered my experience with this drink by possession of a bottle instead of a pour in an improper glass in a rowdy and loud pizza bar.

bottled 07/08 Dark, red-brown color with a minimal head. Smells sticky-sweet and bready, glue and sour and certainly tastes that way, delicious with a slight hint of lemon zest. This is a really good sour and on par with supplication but slightly sweeter and thicker. Le Terroir is still my favorite NB but this is a very close second. Sharp nose of tart cherries, currants, lemon and light caramel. Body light to thin, orange to light amber in color. Strong cherries flavor, dried fruit, light toast, tart raspberries, very light toast and apple. Light to medium acidity. Incredibly dry finish, tart, very lingering

A- Pours a deep dark red hue with brown highlights, thin layer of sparse white bubbles, minimal lacing S- Farmhouse funk, yeast, dark fruits, molasses, apples, vanilla, oak T- Initial taste is tart and tangy fruits, cranberries and green apples followed by hints of dark fruits, mild malts, and oak, finishes sour and dry. . . absolutely delicious M- Medium-bodied, watery texture, mild carbonation D- This is one sharp Flanders Red Ale that is best enjoyed sipping and in lower quantities, the flavor profile is smooth yet complex, and great example of the style complemented well by wood aging
