Commercial Description:
La Folie Wood-Aged Biere, is our original wood-conditioned beer, resting in French Oak barrels between one and three years before being hand bottled, numbered and corked for your enjoyment. Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, came to us from Rodenbach – home of the fabled sour red. Our La Folie emulates the spontaneous fermentation beers of Peter’s beloved Flanders with sour apple notes, a dry effervescence, and earthy undertones.

9/13/08 - 750 ml bottle shared with Exec Board. Pours murky brown with rimming chocolate/khaki head. Sugary sweet carame, sour/vinegar notes. Taste is sour apple with mild cherry, tart as hell, with brown sugar and mild sourdough notes. Oh, and did I mention sour? Nicely balanced. Good stuff.

Bottle. Aroma of tart-ish cherries, raspberries, musty brett, unusual chocolate notes, and a pretty strong malt presence left. Flavor extremely acidic, bordering on vinegary, but still contains that rich, earthy, sour malt with light oak. Very good.

Bottle courtesy of Sparky27 (thanks Eric!). Pours a dirty brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of tart sweettart candies and earthiness. Very reminiscent of Rodenbach Grand Cru. Flavor of tartness with a pinch of vinegar and oddly for a 6%, a slight alcohol tinge. Acidic but decently drinkable. This is a pretty good sour, but not quite there in the flavor department (compared to the best sours that is).

750ml bottle. Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with an almost yellow head to it. Nice earthy tart aroma to it. Flavor on this thing is amazing! It is so complex with hints of oak, apple and even a little vinegar. The sourness is perfect. It’s not too harsh but it has enough to it. I love this beer, and there is a reason why it has won so many medals.

On tap at 515 in Santa Cruz. Poured into a snifter. Hazy opaque saffron with a nebulous white head that leaves spotty wet lacing. Aromas of peppery alcohol, limoncello, citrus zest, pinot noir. Flavors of caramel apple sweetness, green apple skin, fruity jammy wininess, and acetic sourness, with a dry oaky finish. Sharp mouthfeel with modest carbonation. Awesome complexity.

Bottle: (Thanks BlackForestCO!) Pours a cloudy burgundy with a khaki head. The aroma is earthy and very acetic. Strong vinegar, very mild cocoa notes, raspberry tartness, oak and some bretty funk of leather. Silky body feel, with a very strong acetic character in the flavor- assertive and sharp with sour cherry skin and plenty of funk. Has notes of leather and lemony acidity, and soft oak. when it warms just a touch of dark malt peek through giving it just the slightest nuance of cocoa. A nice sour!
