vtmobile (41), USA Dec 31, 2006 this might be my first sour but it will be my last. 13 bucks for this vile buttugly brew that was little more than hard cider with foam. The palate is fruity with a nice bloom of sour cherries and lemon. The caqrbonation is weak and short. The tart blasts on your tongue and just turns you mouth on its side. sorry. IMtheOptimator (1161), Bethel, Connecticut, USA Dec 25, 2006 Bottle courtesy of Internet Wines & Sprits. Poured a hazy copper with a small fizzy/creamy off-white head. Aroma of tart black cherries, yeast, barnyard funk, and a touch of candy and caramel. Flavor is tart but very balanced... light wild cherries, some wood flavor, lemony tartness. Causes a bit of phelgm to congeal in the back of the throat, but still very delicately drinkable. Very little toffee flavor, which tends to abound in the style. A very refreshing, balanced, and drinkable sour ale. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA Dec 23, 2006 Updated: Apr 17, 2007Fresh 750ml. Very lively pour, carbonation rolling over like an angry tide. Nothing like a sour brown at 10am, however not such a good combination with my Dunkin Donuts croissant sandwich. Aroma is of wood, wood, more wood and cherries and lactobacillus. Taste is very satisfying, very full bodied for a sour. The tart finish leaves nothing to be desired and fades beautifully into a cacophony of flavor. Would be great with baked salmon and asparagus. TheSchmagler (6), St Louis, Missouri, USA does not count Dec 18, 2006 This is an absolutly BEAUTIFUL beer, it’s dark pinkish-amber color; a sustained bead; a toffee-like start; then apple and passion fruit notes. IT is very sour very complex and wonderfully balanced.
La Folie is reminiscent of Belgium’s Rodenbach Flemish Red Ale, which just happens to be produced by the brewery where the NBB brew master, Peter Bouckaert, hails from.
The quantities are limited, but some just arrived in St Louis!!!!
JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Dec 16, 2006 Tap at Mugs Ale House. Cloudy, ruby tinted orange colour. Amazingly tart nose, lactic acidity over sweet cherry and cherry skins. Intensely acidic with a hint of wet straw and light acetic notes. Very Rodenbach-ish. Mouth-puckeringly tart flavour. Fantastic, fruity, cherry/berry flavours. Some blackberry flavour as well with soft vanilla notes in back. Soft caramel notes underneath all of the tartness, but the flavour is still wonderfully dry. Very resfreshing and incredibly complex. Light barnyardy character behind the intense lactic/acetic notes. One of the most sour beers I’ve tasted, and one of the best. The saddest thing is that I know I won’t see it again for awhile. smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA Dec 16, 2006 pours hazy red with thin fizzy heads. has legs (interesting). aroma is sweet sour apple and cherries. flavor is sour apple and very tart cherry (cherry sweet tarts) and some wood notes in there. finishes quite tart. pretty good considering this is my first sour ale isnt reeally what im into. Beaver (587), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Dec 15, 2006 750 ml bottle, caged and corked. Bottle # 05-4260, purchased 7/3/06. Pours a clear reddish amber with a thin off-white head that quickly diminishes to a wispy collar that has some legs.
The aroma is peppery wood, fruits, a tart acidic sourness and some sweet-tarts.
The flavor is a little sweet fruitiness quickly followed by a huge mouth-puckering sourness - kind of like the sour sweet-tarts. The mouthfeel is medium to full and low on carbonation, but what little there is is pretty sharp and zings the back of the throat.
Overall, a very nice sour ale! It’s different and not for everyone, but is quickly addicting. It has much more in your face sourness than the Panil.
TPaliga (212), Munster, Indiana, USA Dec 13, 2006 Pours dark red/brown. Aroma is sour fruit and earth. Flavor is much the same, sour fruit, earthy notes. Lively palate. Tart. Dry sour lasting finish.
