Commercial Description:
La Folie Wood-Aged Biere, is our original wood-conditioned beer, resting in French Oak barrels between one and three years before being hand bottled, numbered and corked for your enjoyment. Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, came to us from Rodenbach – home of the fabled sour red. Our La Folie emulates the spontaneous fermentation beers of Peter’s beloved Flanders with sour apple notes, a dry effervescence, and earthy undertones.

Tap @ Toronado. Dark mahogany red color wit ha slight tan head. A powerfully tart and intense sour cherry fruit, woody, burning, spiced cinnamon, ginger, light apple. A wonderful beer but must be taken slowly.

2004 tasted a couple months ago. Amber brown. Small off white head. Vinegared cherries, oak, sourness, earth, subtle spice, and a dry finish. A bit past its prime. Smooth, medium palate.

From a 750mL Bottle. Deep caramelly brown coloring with a healthy finger of white head. Outstanding sour aromas of woody, funky oak blends nicely with some chardonnay tannins and a squeeze of fresh lemon. A light fruity wave of juicy apple flesh and under-ripe pear skins compliment the acetic presence nicely, and are even sweetened by just a hint of maple syrup. Hints of vanilla. Light bodied, tingly mouthfeel that brings loads of rich, tart fruit flavors to the palate. Perfectly intensely sour without being excessively vinegary. Dry, yet loads of flavor complexity and a firm body. I’m envisioning a freshly baked apple crisp garnished with a slice of cidery lemon peel. A hint of white pepper spice lingers among the oak, leaving me to smack my lips appreciatively in the final smack. Amazing brew.

Shared at Columbus tasting by moejuck. Pours slightly reddish. Aroma and flavor and sweetarts and sourness. I didnt think something could be more sour than beatification but this is. Leaves a little too much sour on the back of the tongue though. Still pretty good though.

Aroma was very sour with hints of fruits. The pour was a reddish brown with a medium head off white head. Medium palate presented tastes of sour fruits. Plenty of tart in this one--which I love. Not quite as good as I had expected, but a very solid sour.

On tap into a small tulip, Falling Rock Tap House. Finally, I get to rate this. Smells freaking fantastic. I smelled it for a full five minutes before daring to taste it. Acid cherry and granny smith apple in the nose; something lurks in there reminding me of white zinfindel and sharp blue cheese (without the cheese). The taste explodes like Enola Gay dropped it. My eyes watered it was so intense. More purely sour than any gueuze I’ve had. Fruitier than a gueuze, not as straightforwardly dry, but not as fruity and round as a Rodenbach. Granny Smith apples dominate the taste with a lack of sweetness (although the taste contains cinnamon syrup and caramel), some cherry, and dark spidery yeasty things after the sour dies off. Sour fumes even waft up into the nose from the back. The finish is almost dry, but the acid keeps bringing up saliva, so it can’t really achieve it. Body is medium, somewhat fizzy. Officially dope, although doesn’t aspire to the heights; if the finish were more developed, or it were a bit more complex, would be one of my all-time bests.
