La Folie, French for "the folly," is a beer steeped in New Belgium brewing tradition. This wood-aged, sour brown spends one to three years in big, oak barrels, known as foeders. And when the beer finally hits the glass, La Folie is sharp and sour, full of green apple, cherry, and plum-skin notes. Pouring a deep mahogany, the mouthfeel will get you puckering while the smooth finish will get you smiling. Not a beer for the timid, La Folie is a sour delight that will turn your tongue on its head. Find out why it’s considered one of the best sour beers around.

On tap @ Chuck’s 85th. Pours dark reddish brown with minimal head. Sour cherries jump out on the nose. Big, lip puckering sourness on initial taste. Solid notes of apple, cherry, and oak. Dry, crisp body that finishes super clean. Easy for many sour beers to hide their alcohol, but this is nicely moderate. Probably the most commonly available sour and delicious to boot! Pretty sure this was my first sour many years ago, and although my reaction to them has changed quite a bit, this is still an archetype for the style.

A palateable beer and a reasonable sour, but a taste that I just can’t appreciate.

Bottle. Pours a deep red color. Fruity, vinous and sweet aroma. Taste is even more vinous. A bit dry. Notes of currant seeds. Reminds me of a sour beer from Lost Abbey.

Flaska från systemet - Väldigt syrlig i doften, mörk i färgen med vit skumkrona. Syrlig smak, som börjar lagom men blir sedan överdriven och smakar lite magsyra.

Bottle @ home. Pours a brown liquid with a rather lasting beige head. Medium tart and woody aroma with some fruity sweetness. Notes of oak, sweet cherries, caramel, brown sugar, lemon, light barnyard, vinous plums, apple and some card board. Taste is dry, woody of oak and with fruity cherries initially. With a nice smooth sourness in mid taste that fades into a lasting dry, tart and acidic lemon and raspberry note in after taste. Flavors also of strawberries, earth, red apples, plums, spices. Really nice and well balanced.

Pours a clear copper colour with a nice creamy off white head. Aroma is smells a little bit like a sour cider with some oak notes, tough scent to really pin down. Taste is sour, not much else I can say. Medium body, lightly carbonated and thinner on the palate. I guess I’m just not a fan of sour beers.
