Commercial Description:
La Folie Wood-Aged Biere, is our original wood-conditioned beer, resting in French Oak barrels between one and three years before being hand bottled, numbered and corked for your enjoyment. Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, came to us from Rodenbach – home of the fabled sour red. Our La Folie emulates the spontaneous fermentation beers of Peter’s beloved Flanders with sour apple notes, a dry effervescence, and earthy undertones.

Perhaps it was just the right time for this to be the right beer, but I truly think this is just one remarkable sour that would never let me down. Dark caramel, amber-brown colored body with a filmy head and minor spots of lacing. Amazing acidic aroma of tart cherries, red wine and comforting vinegar. Medium bodied and the sourness attacks the taste buds, it’s a full on assault, very zesty feeling. Sips wonderfully and makes the mouth water wishing for more. Prominent sour cherry flavor with a sour mash and woody taste. Port wine that has started to turn perhaps. This is a wonderful creation, one of the richest and all around pleasing sour ales I’ve tried to date.

Pours an opaque dark chocolate brown with a fine-bubbled tan head. Aroma is strong, rich and fruity. Pleasantly sour flavor is strongly of sour apple and quite fierce - those who love sour ales should flip over this one! Texture is fairly smooth and nicely tingly.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with virtually no head. Aroma is woody with nice funkiness in the nose. Taste is sweet and sour. Nice sour cherry flavor. Medium body, lively with a long finish. Was not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised.

On tap @ The Stable - 12.23.09. Brownish red with very thin tan head. Aroma of sour fruit, raisins. Tastes sour, tart, pungent, musky, dark dried fruits. Very dry mouth feel. "Good like Robitussin" said my friend Steve.

Pours dark reddish brown, medium khaki head. Crazy good aroma. Sweet/tart cherries, high quality balsamic vinegar. Very sour flavor, prickly palate. Lip-smackingly delicious. Dude, this stuff is the shit. Like gueuzes, good Flemish sours taste pretty similar. Just that some are better than others. Remarkably drinkable. Despite being familiar with this beer’s reputation, I’m still taken by surprise to find a Flemish sour of such impecable quality in America. Superb stuff.

Reviewed 11/7/2009 (Bottle): Pours a rich red brown color body with a small light tan head, quickly diminishing. Aroma, very strong sour. Some sweetness like green apples. Effervescent, sweet aftertaste. Light green apple, but mostly sour, little sweetness. Very tart.

This is puckery. Made three other people wince. Once you get used to that initial punch though this calms down and is really good. The fruit really grows on you and the sour dies down (a bit)

Red-tinged brown, pretty well clear w/ a short-lived head of off-white bubbles. Nose is tart and fruity w/ lots of complex spice nose--absolutely the best quality this beer has. Taste is tart but conservatively so for something that says "seriously sour" on the label. The overall effect is quite like some of the tarter pure fruit juices, cranberry or cherry, only w/ added depth and complexity from some tannic overtones. My only gripe is mouthfeel which I felt lacked the necessary effervescence to make this a truly lively experience. Overall, a wonderfully complex beer though.

Large taste at the ORF tasting. Holy shit this is like sucking down 10 sour apple warheads at the same time. I took the first sip of this and was pretty sure my eyes started to water a bit. Huge sour, vinegar, and apple tastes. If you like sour, you’ll love this. It took me a second to figure out if it was just insanely sour, but there’s a lot more to it than that. I think this was the first beer that made my mouth water profusely craving more. Awesome in-your-face sour
