Famous in Michigan for farmhouse ales, our friends at Brewery Viviant introduced us to their biere de garde ale yeast strain. From there, we imagined a slightly tart, intentionally dry beer with hints of bergamot citrus that pairs perfectly with French cheeses.

Bottle. Pours clear dark gold with a medium, frothy white head, medium-short retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is stale farmhouse cheese, sugary wet grains, pear and apricot fruity esters, and a faint aroma of old, dirty hops. Flavor is sweet steeped grains and straw malt, light hops and bitterness, gently rotting peaches and a lightly sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.

22 oz. bottle, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma of bready malts, sort of stale-like, with some barnyard and yeasty noes. Flavour brings out some earthy qualities, white wine notes, some toasted bread and some aged farmhouse yeast, with a bit of the orange peel further back. No hint of the 9% - drinks dangerously smooth, like a 5% beer. Body is light, though quite full-flavoured. Great stuff.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Foco. Pours a clear golden appearance with a fluffy, off-white head. Super floral, almost cleanser-like, light lemon, dry straw, a bit musty aroma. Tangy, lavender, quite floral/potpourri, tart lemon, dry, a touch cheese-like flavor. Kind of an interesting beer, but not my favorite.

Tap at Crystal Beer Parlor, Savannah. It pours hazy orange-amber with a small white head. The nose is fresh orange, sherbet, candy, tinned peach, appetizer and lemon poppy seed muffin. The taste is zesty orange, lemon, earth, orange sponge cake, light spice, dough, some alcohol warmth and appletizer with a dry, bitter-sweet finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and slighty sticky mouth-feel. A touch on the sweet side, but prett tasty nonetheless. Decent stuff.

This brew is a clear pale orange color with a medium white head that recedes steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. The aroma contains citrus, yeast and malt. Medium body with flavors of mildly tart fruit, earthy yeast and biscuit malt. The finish is fruity with a fresh citrus aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle from Champane’s Cellars. Light coloured body with lasting off-white head. Mild orange peel and yeast aroma. The taste is a blend of the spices I normally get in a biere de garde, with the taste of orange peel out and above everything else. Decently drinkable. Booze definately in the taste.

Bottle. Lemon, barley malt and bandaid aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Light barley malt flavor. Light band-aid finish. Chloro-phenol issues - not a fan.

22oz bottle, shared with DanielCoor. Got this from a trade with adnielsen, I’m pretty sure -- thanks Aaron! Sticker on the bottle reads 10/26/12. Very lemony, citrusy aroma in the nose. Light herbs. Clear yellow orange color. Few particles suspended in the body. Thin white head. Pretty nice spread of lace. Bigger body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Love the lemony, citrusy, orange peel flavors. Light spice. Very zesty flavor, moderate sweet. Good fruit beer (that’s how I see this). I liked it a lot. Definitely out there for a biere de grade, way stronger and fruitier than typical, but I enjoyed it
