Famous in Michigan for farmhouse ales, our friends at Brewery Viviant introduced us to their biere de garde ale yeast strain. From there, we imagined a slightly tart, intentionally dry beer with hints of bergamot citrus that pairs perfectly with French cheeses.

The 22oz bomber pours clear gold with an off white head of foam. The aroma is earthy gravel, orange, lemon and lime. Interesting and oddly inviting. The taste is smooth with earthy sweet apple to pear to orange like fruitiness with a gravel sort of earthiness off in the background. Enjoyable product with enough depth to keep it interesting.

Bomber. Poured fairly bright yellow with a short-lived white head. The aroma picked up sour, metallic fruit skins and citrus paired with a bit of sweet berry.. a bit of clove and ginger too.. a bit of dry funk accented.. I really didn’t get it. The flavor found the same tangy, metallic character throughout, along with dry floral and fruity funk.. orange peel and light white spices around.. finished dry and funky, but not that enjoyable. Medium-bodied, tangy, and dry on the palate.. somewhat tacky at times.. finished with strong, bitter warmth.. this just didn’t do it for me.

Draft to taster. Looks solid; a transparent gold with white lacing. Smells solid too; tart and minty. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. I get some tea notes in there too. Pleasantly interesting.

Draft at ebp. Pours a hazy medium gole with a loose white head. Big funky nose--nice barnyard effect. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Tangy oranges, basement, and minerals on the mid palate. Dry and pretty interesting. Could be a little livelier and more complex.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, cereal), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, apricot), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with strong notes of candy sugar / cotton candy, other notes of pear syrup, gum, unripe peach, egg whites. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Uhhhhh...wut? Biere de Garde? Not even close. "Intentionally dry"? Huh??? Compared to what, a mouthful of stevia? The harsh reality is that this is a goopy, syrupy sweet sugar bomb. Cloying and unbalanced and totally without any BdG traits. Awful and undrinkable. Gack!

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with medium frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is strong floral and honey. Thin mouth with sweet fruit, honey, yeast, light tartness, very good. Sudsmcduff is awesome!

Bottle:   Orangish straw, pale haze, moderate frothy white head, little lacing.   Non-deScript floral nose, a little honeydew melon perhaps.   Soft, musty, and warming like yeasty breadiness.   Has a soft floral aspect that is lighter than the nose suggested.   Not as musty or barnish as others, but with more punch and muted spicy bits.   Hard to believe this is actually 9%!   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Yeasty/doughy/bready finish, but not too heavy or musty.   Comes across as way lighter than the 9% implies.   A bit too easy to drink.   Enjoyed it more than those from France!

Clear golden color with white head. Nice salty, peppery, doughy, mild sulfer aromas. medium body, average carbonation. Same salty, peppery phenolic flavors as in the smell, with some bready pale malts and dry spice---good brew

Clear golden with a small foamy white head. Funky earthy aroma of frosted corn flakes and fresh baked biscuits. The flavor was also pretty cereal oriented with that Kellogs Corn Flakes kinda tone with some powdered sugar and earthy pale blonde maltiness, and a dry yet fruity apricot subtlety. Drinkable, but weird.
