COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Biere De Mars is New Belgium’s exploration of the classic French and Belgian brews celebrating the half-winter, half-spring month of March. Our bottle-conditioned version, however, goes where no BIERE DE MARS has gone before. After gazing at its cloudy, yet glowing orange hue, prepare yourself for a celestial collaboration of oats, wheat, barley malt and lemon verbena, all of which is set into orbit by unidentified flying yeast strains.

Hint of apples and pears when first poured to be overwhelmed by a malty aroma. Cloudy burnt orange color with large yeast particles floating about. Full bodied smooth and creamy on the palate with long lasting bitter after taste.

Looks like an Iraqi sandstorm ... awesome orange/gold color. Some really unusual fruit flavor undoubtedly brought about by the oats and lemon, makes for a damned tastey brew. New Belgium does it again!

Bottled. Amber coloured. Funky, yeasty aroma. Fruity and very lively with notes of blue cheese. Clean hard malt profile. Notes of toffee in the finish.

Tap at brewery: Hazy/orange in color. A rather dry palate. Lemon gives a nice zest with citrus notes. Very light and pleasant.

3/22/03: bottle. cloudy orange body. citrus nose. malty with a very slight lemon aftertaste. pretty sharp on the tongue (possibly from the wheat.) dry finish. thanx again to legion242 for the hook-up.

Decent head, white over a soft reddish-brown body. Underlying fruitiness, citric, but dry and a slightly astringent finish. Mild aroma, lively palate. Creative and overall excellent. Or, as Per said to me, "funky", because there sometimes just aren't the right words to describe it.

Aroma is dominated by malt with some subtle hints of citrus and baseball card bubblegum. Slightly hazy orange-amber in color, tightly beaded white head. Flavor is kind of like a half-assed wit bier - light malt with some citrus and unusual yeasty notes, but not much else. Light-bodied with considerable carbonation making for an overall soft mouthfeel. Unremarkable.

Aroma translates to must, orange, mildewy books, powdered citrus sugar, hay, and a little yeast…appearance was slightly hazy golden yellow and a tad shiny in the light... a solid but thin layer of suds topped things off…uneventful citrus flavor with a yeasty display of slight blood, acidic banana, and hay flavors…it turns spicy near the end...maybe lemon zest, orange juice, coriander, pollen, and white pepper...yeastiness grows as does the orange flavors..but it doesnt combine well in my opinion..kinda astrigent mouthfeel actually...tastes like malt liquor after a while..

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2003 A challenging beer, this isn't like the Saisons I've had before at all. Orange-colored, very fragrant fruit and grain aroma. Flavor is grainy and sour. Some kind of wild and crazy yeast and/or bacteria? Re-Rate: Mar 29, Different now! Bought another six-pack, noticeably better. Hops in aroma! no sourness this time, still spicy though. gains several points. yeast aroma is that of cider. Very original beer, I'm glad New Belgium has the guts to release stuff like this.
