COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Biere De Mars is New Belgium’s exploration of the classic French and Belgian brews celebrating the half-winter, half-spring month of March. Our bottle-conditioned version, however, goes where no BIERE DE MARS has gone before. After gazing at its cloudy, yet glowing orange hue, prepare yourself for a celestial collaboration of oats, wheat, barley malt and lemon verbena, all of which is set into orbit by unidentified flying yeast strains.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2012 Update, bottle, LOF version, April 2012. Makes me wonder if my original rating below was really for the same beer. This is richly orange, highly carbonated, with a firm but thin head. The beer emits quite the aroma -- robust and weighted with fruit, yeast and herbs. The beer drinks with a warming edge, flavored with a bit of orange rind, and garden freshness. Numbers updated/upped based on this latest impression. <<Original rating, Feb 2004, from a non-LOF bottle: Hazy orange-yellow with a decent head (if poured down the middle of the glass). There’s honey on the nose. Decent yeast-weighted flavor with a wheaty character, smooth but not overbearing. Not as full-charactered as a good Belgian wheat, but not a bad interpretation for the US market.>>

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2003 ReRate: Golden orange colored, with a slight haze to it. Good head with exceptional lacing. Aroma is initially slightly hoppy then developes into full form at warmer temperatures and there are brilliant notes of apricot, orange, corriander, pepper and spicyness. Flavor is full of cheer with spice and pepper, citrus notes are abundant and complex. The finish is smooth and refreshing and overall this one is just a wonderful saison, this one got much better with a couple months of extra aging.

(Draught at Meddlesome Moth) pale yellow pour with soapy white bubbles. Nose and taste have umami, sweaty socks, some light white pepper, Belgian yeast, and very faint brett. The palate linger isn’t very good either. Disappointed. Had this from the bottle previously and liked its floral and brett influence better. Seemed lacking here.

On tap at Apex, pours a hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of doughy malt - not much on the nose really. Flavour of dry bread, wheat and maybe some yeast - similarly bland flavour profile. Pointless beer to me, yet dry and refreshing. Decent enough I suppose.

Bomber from the Sam’s in Downers Grove, Illinois: It poured a slightly hazed orange/amber body with an ecru film in lieu of a head. It had an aroma of lemon, soft caramel, warm spices, and a touch of funk. Very socft mouthfeel - perhaps too soft. The flavor added a touch of tropical fruit and a mild citrus rind bitterness. The finish was dry and mildly bitter. Pretty decent.

Pours golden orange with a white head. The aroma is light brett funk with some chocolate and caramel malts. The flavor is caramel malt with yeast and brett funk. You also get some citrus fruit and toffee. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Orange color, medium head. Very malty, complex blend of oats, wheat, barley malts and lemon verbena. Nicely hoppy, good balance. Mouthfeel is full. Very complex taste, good full flavor. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is a little sweet and malty. Very different, good taste. Interesting beer.

22 oz bottle courtesy of Binnys South Loop and shared with a couple friends. Pours a well carbonated sunshine amber, decent white head that laces pretty well, fairly lively carbonated body. Aromas throw a combo of belgian yeast, a touch of spice, vanilla and honey. Initial is a bit floral, a bit funky but that doesn’t play a huge role. Vanilla, honey, belgian yeasty spice.. Flowers. Light, a touch of cinnamon, clove. Finishes dry, lightly bitter. Underlying sweetness and spice sticks to the palate. A decent effort, just a strange mishmash of styles for me.

12 oz bottle - Central Market - Austin,Tx. Pours a murky light peach color with a thin but long lasting white head. Aroma has a bit of a lemony zest to it. Flavor is pleasant, but muddled. Has some citrus notes, with a bit of white grape in there. Some yeasty notes make their way in the back end as well. Mouthfeel is fairly thick for the style. Overall, decent, nothing to write home about.

Poured a hazy, reddish orange color with a small off white head that quickly diminished leaving . Aroma of lots of citrus, light funky barnyard, grass, lemon, and yeast. More grassy hoppiness, lemon, orange and other citrus tastes. Yeasty, but no alcohol in the finish.
