COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
New Belgium Brewing and The Lost Abbey brewery from San Marcos, California have a shared passion for a variety of things, not the least of which is the wild Belgian yeast brettanomyces. So they decided to join forces and collaborate. Lost Abbey Collaboration is brewed simply with pale malts accompanied by Target, Centennial and Sorachi hops for a hint of citrus. Focusing on their mutual respect for the ingredient, the spotlight shines on the brettanomyces, where a full brett fermentation offers bold pineapple overtones and funky, sour edge. The beer is a shining, golden shade and is warming and dry. Lost Abbey Collaboration is available on draft and in 22-ounce bombers.

22oz bottle. Hazy straw color with a smaller sized head. Aromas of some brett, rotted citrus rinds, and some fruitiness. Tastes of citrus, brett, some fruits.

Bottle. Pours lightly hazy pale gold with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is light Brettanomyces, straw and meal malt, fruity esters and spicy hops. Flavor is malt dominant, barnyard yeast and Brettanomyces, spicy hops and light bitterness with fruity esters and a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.

BMan1113VR (7420) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JUL 15, 2012
Bottle. Low haze with some particles in the glass. Pale yellow hue with a large and lasting, foamy white head with decent lace. Aromas are malty, bready, biscuity, medium ester: a touch of pineapple. Lightly grassy, citrusy and lemony hop presence. Medium phenol with some alcohol. Flavors are a touch sweet (sweeter than Mo Betta), decently strong alcohol for the stated ABV. A bit of a sharp ester profile. Some pear drops and pineapple. Bready malt, but a touch thin overall. Pretty clean. Better than the ratings thus far suggest. Nothing really offensive. Medium to fuller carbonation, thin body, a bit warming. Medium-light bitterness that doesn’t last much. Overall a somewhat bland beer.

Cloudy gold pour, frothy white head. Aroma of brett, leather, sweet malt, sugar cookie, light hop extract. Flavor is much sweeter than I expected. Very malt driven flavor, i think this one needs time.

22oz bottle: pours a clear effervescent golden with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a lightly sweet biscuity malty nose with touch of herbal hops and mild tartness. Starts with average fullness and light malty sweetness with a hint of lemon zest and a touch of caramel before a semi-sweet and tart finish. Doesn’t have much in the way of funk or tartness, but has a decent saison base.

The pour is a golden color with a white head. Nose is sweet malt, some fruity hops and esters such as lemon, pineapple, apple, and maybe some banana. Just the slightest musty funk in the background. Like the aroma, there is a sweetness to the flavor along with some slight tartness of citrus fruits. A hint of pineapple, some banana, and a touch of apple. Mild spice notes, too. Not really what I think most would expect, but still an enjoyable beer.

3fourths (7063) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 22, 2012
bottle. hazed gold with a tall-building white head. cream and tropical esters in the nose with some dirty dishwater phenols and a high amount of bubble gum. mostly sweet with low carbonation and low acid and very mild brett must - much more soap, tropical fruits, green sweet hops and sugar, lots of sugar. cloying and syrupy even with a thin body. low acidity, medium-low bitterness, mild sourness, medium tartness. simple and unexciting, suffers from too much sweetness and the brett lacks vibrancy.

Bomber. Poured clear, bright golden with a short, but easily-resuscitated white head. The aroma picked up lemon rind, funky Brett, and pineapple over pale and very light bready malts.. interesting, but not entirely enjoyable. The flavor opened with a light, dry citrus tartness, with more citrus and funky, floral Brett behind.. more of the funk with residual pineapple graininess on the finish.. again interesting, but not entirely for me. Light-medium bodied with low-ish carbonation on the palate.. dry.. I wanted to like this, but it didn’t quite work.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a large frothy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of pale malts, mild brett, citrus and green apple. The taste is earthy brett, sweet malts, citrus, pear, pineapple. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, very smooth. Nice beer.
