3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
A strong boozy brew. Some of the spice aroma youíd expect from a Belgian, but the date and other fruit notes seemed a little out of place. At 10%, it brings the expected amount of alcohol notes, but I just canít help but thing that there is something slightly unbalanced. Overall, not a bad buy or brew just not a home run either...

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
22 oz bottle. Pours ruby amber with a big creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet toffee malts, with dark fruits and some roasted alcohol.
The flavor is sweet toffee malts and dark fruits with a lot of harsh alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.
Overall, a sweet boozy mess. It tastes a bit like their dubbel with a ton of alcohol.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark copper with a cream colored head after an aggressive pour. Belgian yeast, cherries, dates and a hint of coffee both on tthe taste and aroma. I expected this to be a bit sweeter on the finish but was pleasantly surprised by the dry finish.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Orange with a white head. Aroma has some alcohol, dark fruit and raisin notes. Flavor is similar. I get some raisins and cherries, as well as some brown sugar and alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Rich, dense and hazy amber coloured body with some brown tints and a thick two centimetre dense tan head with some hints of orange. Aroma of alcohol, raisins, malt, toffee, caramel and a bit of metal. Medium to Full-bodied; Super strong alcohol warmth and bite coupled with some metallic and earthy bitterness show too much up front with not enough sugar and coffee flavour. Aftertaste has a hint of cascara tea, but mostly bitterness from earth and malt and a profound alcohol bite that isnít pleasant. Overall, a pretty poor offering and perhaps one of the worst from this series. Iíd pass this up if I saw it again, but would most likely buy a bunch of others. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia for US$6.99 on 12-March-2013 sampled at home in Washington on 16-May-2013.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Had on tap.
Pours a hazy dark red with a thick white head. Great head retention as well as lacing that hangs around for a very long time.
The aroma is full of cherry and other dark fruit along with a bit of spice and herbs.
Tons of cherry up front in the aroma along with dates. It almost reminds me of cherry kool-aid at first thatís how strong the cherry is. This transitions into a more herbal and tobacco taste as the flavor progresses. Banana and clove are faintly present in the background along with alcohol becoming more apparent in the finish.
Overall, there is just way too much going on here. It is a little bit messy with nothing seeming to meld just right. A nice attempt at a unique quad but I feel it is just too overdone.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Pours nearly opaque amber with a foamy beige head. Aroma of sweet dark fruit with some Belgian spice/fruit ester. Or so it seems. Full bodied. Thereís noticeable heat. Flavor is dark fruit, light pitted fruit, caramel/treacle. Itís not sticky, but certainly not dry. Extremely warming. I am finally getting something cherry in the finish. And an astringent tea aspect. There is a lot going on here, and the flavor is fairly pleasant. This may be an example of complexity taken too far. Tasty tho.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Just about every flavor you can imagine seems to be in this beer from dark fruits, to chocolate, to coffee, to caramel. Better than youíd expect considering the confusion.

Bottle pour amber color. Nose Belgian candy, sweet fruit, banana, esters. Taste sweet Belgian candy, malt, then bitter finish. Interesting mix in mouthfeel, slight syrupy, but fizzy at same time.

4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Draft at Jerryís. Murky amber with big, creamy, tan head, good legs / Somewhat peculiar, hot nose of paint thinner (alcohol), candied fruit bread, oak?, toffee / Medium to full body, moderately sweet & syrupy, some chewiness, good hop balance and bitterness on the finish / Complex flavors of nut, caramel, fig, date, black cherry, orange peel, chocolate / A quad, a barleywine . . . ., itís good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: Pours a cloudy tea brown with an offwhite cap.
Aroma: Bubble gum and banana creme.
Taste: More bubble gum. Light clove, sweet ripe fruit. The alcohol level is in line with the style.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied lively carbonation.
Overall: This is another case of New Belgium putting all of these words on their product that invoke strong emotions and things to entice the senses, and then the beer itself not meeting those exceptions. By no means is the beer bad, or not tasty, itís just they are being too conservative or over promising and under delivering.
