3.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Really, a BOISE review is the FIRST?? Christ, I have had this a few times in the last week... Folks are scared to enter this one first... I am too. :-)
The first 2x bottles that were shared with me showed a nice hazy golden brew with a decent short lasting white head... THIS bottle has tons of little flecks of what assume are spice or coconut remnants in it.. They are caking all over inside the glass... no head and no retention.. just specks of lord knows what.
The nose is fine and does deliver on the labelís promise (sort of)... there is plenty of curry (garam masala??) with a nice toasty coconut aroma.. the hefe notes are lost and might be picked out as banana, but I am probably imagining things.
Flavor mirrors the nose with an everpresent "bite" from the curry that builds with subsequent sips.. Still the coconut comes up and out. A bit peppery and cardamom builds.. perhaps some cumin and coriander .. The only "hefe" notes I get might be from a bigger ABV fermented out into some banana and "my mindís palate" clove.
Pretty thick across the board with a connoisseur appreciation if done well... The brew delivers on all fronts... but for the "geeks", it is one and done...

Remember the curry being pretty suttle, as well as the coconut. Worked well though, as Iím not a big Hef fan so this spiced it up a bit. Seemed pretty pricey for a bomber, so figured a growler/draft for roughly the same price was worth the try. Not really something I would go out the way for though.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Aromas of bananas, coconuts, and some other exotic friuts, wheat bread, and a touch of something sweet. Flavor is a weird balance of banana flavor with malts and a sweet cloying touch of something.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
October 12th, 2013 - This is one of those brews that seems like it might be a meal in a glass. But New Belgium keeps the flavors from becoming liquid food. Instead, itís an example of how non-traditional tastes can push boundaries aggressively, and spicily. The base of the aroma is like a hefeweizen, but a Japanese curry accent: ginger, brown sugar and...more ginger. I donít taste the coconut, but I do get plenty of that sweet, sugary Japanese curry. Like the aroma, the taste begins with a light hefeweizen touch, and then the curry kicks in. And THEN it kicks in the door, all the way to the aftertaste. The coconut begins to glow in the aftertaste once the brown sugar sweetness disappears. And thereís almost a flavor like chicken, or at least, my brain is substituting in chicken to make the flavor make sense. Lemongrass makes a brief appearance too. All of these curious flavors are almost cloying, but stop just short of that, making this bold brewing adventure a real success, and a drinkable curiosity.

Backlog. Taster at RFD. I hate this beer. It is an experiment gone wrong. To be fair, it never really had a chance with me, as I donít like hefeweizens or putting a ton of spices in beer. That said, it is even worse than I anticipated. Combining all the banana wrongness of a hefe with a spicebomb mess is just a recipe for awful, and in that they succeeded. Read the flavor description, throw up a little in your mouth, and there you go.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20
Aroma is like coconut and curry spice (surprise) with heff spiced undertones. Smooth bodied with over-done spiced coconut, pepper taste. Golden in color with strong white head. I understand the experiment, which is fun, just doesnít make for a good beer.

[Tap] Pours a milky yellow color. Extremely cloudy pour with a large head of dense head. Aromas of curry powder, cinnamon, vanilla and hot peppers. Curry flavor is more subdued. Coconut flakes, ginger, banana, vanilla, nutmeg and citrus flavors. A lot going on here. Good body. Creamy texture. Tasting notes from 8/2014.

I enjoy any attempt at new and interesting flavors. This is one of only two beers that I know of that uses curry. And this one uses it well.
Aroma - very mild
Head - standard to good
Taste - a nice mild curry, the curry mostlymasks the hef wheat taste
Appearance - standard hef with small white chunks (coconut perhaps)

Hazy gold with a whitehead. I get some strong curry notes as well as some wheat, lime, cinnamon, pepper and coconut. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

22oz bottle in a stem glass. Pours hazy golden with a lacy, white head. Aroma of spices and ginger and weirdness, some light banana notes, light malts and wheat. Flavor the same, mainly the weirdness and ginger. Average texture. Not good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
"The other spices definitely take a back seat to the coconut and curry. More heat and this could be a wheat version of the stout Indra Kunindra. Absolutely loved the aftertaste. 8% doesnít show at all except as a bigger body than most wheats. Really nice change of direction. If you dig curry, youíll like this."
